1 3 rd Grade The Year of Independence and Responsibility Individual questions need to be addressed in the most confidential manner. Please schedule a conference with your child’s team of teachers.

2 Everything has a specific purpose!  Organization of binder Page protectors full of resources and strategies AC math folders – 2 pockets for working/scanned Reading log filled out nightly Agenda for homework assignments Math journal for important math notes from class Math morning work completed each morning Checkbook  Personal responsibilities Homework – AC math for 15 minutes nightly/Study multiplication/Read 15 minutes and fill out log/Spelling Activity Having materials needed for each class

3 How can I help my child be a better math student?  AC math Students need to work on AC math every night for 15 minutes. If your child scores below 80%, please review incorrect problems with your child. Your child’s math teacher is always available for assistance.  Multiplication Memorizing multiplication facts are essential to the success your child will experience in 3 rd grade and future grades.  Reinforce Math strategies Utilize “Brain Drain” for AC math and encourage your child to use the strategies practiced in class on all math problems. Strategies can be found in page protectors and math journal. Always show your work!

4 How can I help my child be a better reading student?  Read! Read! Read! 5  Focus on comprehension Up to this point in your child’s education, the focus of reading has been on saying the words correctly. Your child has gone from learning to read.. to… reading to learn. Asking your child questions is an essential part of increasing comprehension. Use sticky notes to spark conversations. The AR program is designed to motivate and monitor comprehension of what is being read. Individual AR tests are not counted as a grade. Use reading strategies all the time in every reading setting! Read on your reading level and gradually challenge yourself to grow as a reader.

6 Important programs that will help your child succeed!  Accelerated Math Individualized math goals each grading period 2 scans per week is minimum expectation (80% or greater)  Accelerated Reader Individualized reading goals each grading period Use ARbookfind.com as resource  First in Math Web- based program purchased for each 3 rd grader High interest with motivation of earning stickers Directly correlates with NC EOG style questioning  SOAR soarathome.org

7 Preparation of NC End of Grade Tests for Reading and Math  Your child must demonstrate a proficiency score of Level 3 or 4 and must have passing grades in core subjects to be eligible for promotion.  Strategies are explicitly taught in lessons and are applied to testing situations. Highlighting/key lighting/sharking Showing work “show me your thinking” Read questions first Pay close attention to titles, pictures, diagrams Circle/underline where you prove your answer  End of Grade tests are mandated to be at an INDEPENDENT level. Therefore, your child must be performing at an independent level to ensure success.
