Presentation transcript:

Harvard is one of the two main styles of referencing, the other is Numeric There are two main differences between the Numeric and Harvard style: 1. The way material is cited in the text and at the end of the work. Numbers are used instead of the author’s last name to identify a source in the text. The list of references at the end is arranged in numerical order. 2. The position of the date. Numeric Referencing

Numeric Citing - rules 1. The numbers can be placed within brackets or as a superscript, e.g. (1) or [1] or 1 2. Use the same number of the first citation if you refer to the same document again. Add page number(s) to indicate different parts if necessary. Example: Wilson (5) suggested that science is…….. And as Wilson (5, p.35) suggests the likely outcome is ……… 3. If the source has one or two authors, list them all. If there are three or more authors, use the first author only with initials and surname followed by “et al.”. However, please note that your teacher may have other preference. There is no fixed rule to this. Example: Thomas et al. (5) suggested that science is……..

Top Tips Keep track of the details for your references as you go along, including bibliographic info and page numbers Be consistent! – Never switch between referencing styles in the same essay and apply the same format consistently throughout your essay Help yourself avoid plagiarism by making sure you can tell your own notes and ideas, from notes you’ve made from other sources. You could use a highlighter pen to help. If you’re not sure how to reference a less conventional source ask your teacher or a librarian for help, or follow a referencing guide Allow yourself plenty of time to do your references, and proofread them before submitting your work
