Approach 2: The Psychodynamic Approach

 A married couple are going through a messy divorce. They have two children, one is eight years old, and the other is six months old. Both the father and mother want sole custody of both children.  Imagine that you are the judge in this case. Assume that both the father and mother would be equally capable of providing a stable home for the child.  Who would you give primary custody to?  Explain your reasons fully.

 Define the term “Primary care-giver” (PCG) (pg 40

WHY IS THIS A DEBATE?  Historically: a lack of understanding about childrearing  Babies need more than just food and warmth!  Romanian orphans  Lacking emotional care and attachment  Long lasting effects

WHY IS THIS A DEBATE?  What is the best way to raise a child?  Do they need a mother as PCG?  Can fathers be PCG?  What are the ethical and social implications of this?

 Before looking at the various arguments for this debate, what is your opinion?  Do children need their mothers to act as a PCG?  Or can that role be fulfilled by fathers or another family member just as easily?

 You are going to investigate this debate by using the content in the textbook, the library, the internet and your own thoughts and arguments.  You are going to work in pairs/three to create a detailed A1 poster that addresses both sides of the argument.

 Advice  Do all the research first, then create a rough sketch of what your poster will look like  Divide up the work equally so that everyone has something to do  The poster can be done by hand, on a computer or a combination of the two  Read the Content and Presentation criteria carefully  On the next slides are some examples of the level of detail expected  Take note of the different ways that these posters display information.

 Go to each group’s poster. Write them some detailed feedback  What things you felt they did well  What things could be improved on  Something that you found interesting on their poster  Take a picture of each poster on your phones to keep as a revision aid.

 Overall, what is your opinion on this debate?  Are mothers vital as PCG?  What about the role of fathers?  Has your opinion changed since the start of this topic.

 Questions on pg 41, “Exam Corner”  Debate blog task (pg 45)
