Being Healthy and Well Health is the condition of physical, emotional, mental, and social well- being Physical Health deals with the body and involves the following good habits: Eat balanced meals and have a balanced diet Participate in plenty of physical activities Get a minimum of 8 hours sleep every night Avoid drugs, alcohol, and tobacco Practice safety by wearing protective gear in sports and seatbelts in moving vehicles Practice good hygiene (keep clean to prevent the spread of disease) Visit your doctor and dentist regularly Emotional Health is the way you recognize and deal with your feelings It affects how you feel about yourself and how you treat other people Be able to express emotions in calm and healthy ways Be able to deal with sadness and get help for depression Be able to accept your strengths and weaknesses

Being Healthy and Well Mental Health is the way you cope with the demands of daily life Be able to easily adjust to change Be able to solve problems with little trouble Be able to deal with stress effectively Be able to accept new ideas Social Health is the way you interact with other people Be considerate of other people (treat others the way you want to be treated) Show respect for other people Share your true feelings with your friends Be dependable Volunteer to do things for your community Be supportive of friends when they make the right choice Having friends and being close to family gives a sense of belonging Knowing others care about you makes you feel good about yourself and makes you want to be a better person and do for others

Influences on Your Health Heredity is the passing of traits from parents to their biological child Physical traits include height, hair color, eye color, and skin color Certain diseases are inherited, like MD, if the genetics traits are passed Environment includes all living and nonliving things around you Air pollution, tobacco smoke, and pollen may affect asthma and allergies Noise pollution can affect concentration and cause stress Amount of daylight you get can affect emotional health Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) can cause depression due to lack of sunlight Asbestos can damage your lungs

Making Good Health Choices Lifestyle is a set of behaviors that you live by Determined by choices you make Good attitude about health helps maintain healthy lifestyle Attitude is a way of acting, thinking, or feeling that causes you to make one choice over another Allows you to listen to advice about healthy living Puts you in charge of your health Preventive Healthcare is taking steps to help prevent illness and accidents and may include: Regular vaccinations and visits to doctor Brush and floss teeth and regular visits to dentist Eating healthy foods, exercise, and adequate sleep Wearing safety equipment in sports and seatbelts in automotives Avoid behavior that can get you in trouble

Nine Life Skills for Better Health Practice Makes Perfect The best way to master any skill is to practice situations Assessing Your Progress – Reflect on your use of all the skills by asking yourself: Which skills do I use most often? Which skills do I rarely use but should use more often? Are there skills that I don’t feel comfortable using? Am I having problems with a specific skill? How can I improve my use of life skills? Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle – Maintain the four parts of health to achieve wellness by remembering to: Spend quality time with family and friends to improve social health Talk openly about problems and express yourself in healthy ways to improve emotional health Open your mind to new ideas and new ways of doing things to improve mental health Eat properly, get rest, and engage in regular physical activity to improve physical health
