Course Description: This course will help you: Cope with personal, family and social challenges. Communicate and apply decision-making skills. Build stable relationships with family and peers. Implement positive coping mechanisms and promote understanding of self. We will cover many topics, including: self-concept, family and peer relationships, substance abuse, personal loss, dating, teenage pregnancy and child abuse.

Teenage Transitions Identify Developmental Tasks that occur during the teenage years. Study self-concept and how it relates to self esteem and personal development. Communication techniques. Common Stressors for teens. Critical Thinking Skills.

Responsible Living Identify Positive Role Models. Identify the skills necessary to make good judgments. Define Peer Pressure, and ways to avoid it. Gender Discrimination.

Families Family Role and Responsibili ties Relationship s with Parents Siblings and Fighting

Friends Discuss and Identify different types of friendships Discuss the importance of good friends

Dating Discuss why adolescence is not a time to pair off. Identify desirable dating qualities. Talk about sexual harassment & abuse.

Reality Care Discuss the demands and responsibiliti es associated with parenthood. Define and discuss child abuse.

Sexual Responsibility Discuss physical intimacy and the accompanying choices and consequences. Define abstinence. Discuss Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD’s)

Grading: In this class, you will: Write daily in your Positivity Journals Listen to & take notes on topics covered in class Participate in games and learning activities Work on assignments related to topics Be tested on your knowledge

You are allowed to have your phone out on the desk in the corner, as long as it’s face down and you’re not touching it. Sometimes I will allow you to use your phones in class.
