Bolla, 2016 February 2 The capability to generate track stubs in the module requires tight alignment tolerances between the top and bottom sensors and this translate on complex precise gigs for the module assembly. Fine granularity increases the channel density and consequently the power dissipation. The challenge of funneling the power in the small diameter CO2 cooling pipes is tackled with R&D on composite materials Low mass Good thermal conductivity

USCMS is committed to: QC and QA on sensors (prototypes and production) Development of a US based vendor (Novati) Recently delivered to the TK community the first full size MAPSA dummy bump-bonded module for prototyping module assembly. Process will continue with the investigation of vendors for the bump-bonding production.

Still it shows that there is an ongoing process to generate accurate estimates of the work and labor needed to accomplish the complex tasks required by the Outer Tracker module assembly.

 The current construction plan involves no materials of identified environmental risks  Cooling plant is based on CO 2 rather than freon.  Commonly used chemicals (glue and cleaning supplies) will be treated according to facilities procedures 22 ES&H Director's Review -- Tracker OverviewC. Hill, 2016 February 2  Detector will use medium and high voltage (~600 V) and will be operated in a refrigerated mode (-20° to -30°C).  Standard operational procedures will be developed and documented to allow safe operation  R&D and some production testing will involve the use of gamma, neutron, and proton radiation.  These tests will be performed at commonly-used radiation facilities and will follow the standard operational procedures defined at each facility

 Quality Assurance : Prevention of Issues  Complexity of the modules requires design and implementation of components to deliver ready to use sub-assembly for modules production. o Identification of problems at the prototype level is necessary to avoid impact to cost or schedule  Plan for sufficient quantity of prototypes/preproduction needed to identify issues  Irradiations, “burn-in” tests, thermal cycling tests, system tests  Quality control : prompt feedback to the production lines  Continuous interplay between assembly and testing during each stage of construction.  Use databases to track all components through the assembly and testing processes 23 Quality Assurance and Quality Control Director's Review -- Tracker OverviewC.  HL-LHC Outer Tracker Project is the highest priority upgrade within CMS and USCMS:  Increased granularity  Increased radiation hardness  Reduced mass with increased power density  Generation of stubs needed to feed a L1 track finder in the trigger system  This challenging work is supported with a strong R&D plan that is being executed and that is also generating cost/labor estimates for the production.  The US involvement is being shaped in details  Develop and build ~6000 modules  Develop and build the mechanics for the inner Barrel  Cost and schedule estimates are appropriately detailed for the current stage of project preparation  The HL-LHC Outer Tracker upgrade is making good progress on preparations for DOE CD1 25 Summary Director's Review -- Tracker OverviewC.
