1 Homework Questions for eRD1 EIC R&D Committee Meeting January 23, 2015 1. What are the concrete plans of eRD1 for the next two years? What are the deliverables ? What are the possible milestones? 2. What motivates efforts on BSO? Can you provide more detailed arguments that drive this effort? 3. What do we know about the track record of Crytur? What have they so far delivered to any experiment (crystal sizes, quantities)?

2 Plans for Next 2 Years, Deliverables and Milestones C.Woody, EIC R&D Committee Meeting, 1/23/15 W/SciFi Calorimeter Deliverables 1.Complete studies on how to improve light collection uniformity within a single tower module using an optical filter and implement this improvement on an array of towers 2.Construct an array of modules consisting of a low density absorber (Sn) with smaller fiber diameter (0.4 mm) and smaller fiber to fiber spacing (0.67 mm). 3.Develop a procedure for constructing fully projective modules. Construct a small prototype of these modules representative of various rapidities. Transfer this technology to THP. 4.Work with THP to develop a cost effective mass production procedure for producing W/SciFi modules. Have THP produce a 4x6 array of single tapered modules using their procedure. 5.Construct a full scale prototype of an EMCAL/HCAL sector of the central barrel calorimeter 6.Test all modules described above in a test beam at Fermilab Milestones: 1.Development of a successful procedure for producing fully projective modules. This needs to be determined within the next 6 months in order to decide on the sPHENIX calorimeter design 2.Development of a mass production procedure for producing modules (either at THP or elsewhere). This will be developed over the next ~ 2 years. 3.Design, construction and testing of a full scale prototype (time scale ~ 1 year)

3 Plans for Next 2 Years, Deliverables and Milestones C.Woody, EIC R&D Committee Meeting, 1/23/15 Radiation Damage in SiPMs Deliverables 1.Complete radiation damage studies on SiPMs from various manufacturers with different pixel sizes using neutrons and gammas. Study effects in the radiation environment at RHIC. Study effects of thermal neutrons using shielding (e.g., Cd). 2.Develop electronics and calibration system to deal with effect of increase current due to radiation 3.Estimate radiation levels (neutrons + ionizing) at EIC using a realistic simulation 4.Deliverable would be a recommendation on the best type of device to use for a calorimeter or other detector at EIC. Milestones: 1.Determination of a suitable photosensor for calorimeter applications at EIC 2.Producing a reasonably accurate estimate of the radiation levels expected at EIC

4 Plans for Next 2 Years, Deliverables and Milestones C.Woody, EIC R&D Committee Meeting, 1/23/15 Crystals Deliverables 1.Obtain large PWO crystals from Crytur 2.Obtain a consistent set of large crystals from SIC 3.Build and test a 5x5 prototype of PWO with the best quality PWO crystals 4.Test 3x3 prototype BSO prototype 5.Develop a full set of requirements and specifications for a forward crystal calorimeter at EIC Milestones: 1.Obtain consistent high quality PWO crystals from either SIC or Crytur 2.Develop consistent high quality BSO crystals from SIC with future mass production capability 3.Determination of requirements and specifications for the crystal calorimeter

5 Crytur C.Woody, EIC R&D Committee Meeting, 1/23/15 Involved in PWO production since the early days of CMS (formerly Preciosa) Much experience with producing oxide crystals Full product line of optical and laser materials (~ 30% of business) Main business is X-ray spectroscopy and electron microscopy Strong ties to Minsk and former crystal crowers at BTCP Strong connections to several research groups at Prague Possible plans for these groups to join FAIR and work on crystal calorimeter for PANDA Presently have a contract to deliver 20 large crystals to PANDA

6 PWO Samples produced at Crytur C.Woody, EIC R&D Committee Meeting, 1/23/15 So far, only small crystals, but quality looks good

7 BSO C.Woody, EIC R&D Committee Meeting, 1/23/15 The effort on BSO that was started several years ago was motivated by the hope of developing a low cost alternative to PWO as a forward EMCAL for EIC It appeared at the time that SIC was going to develop this material for other purposes (e.g., HHCAL) and it might become available future for use at EIC This situation is not so clear now, and it remains to be seen how much effort and resources SIC will put into this development I do not think it is possible or practical for EIC R&D to fund the full development of mass production of BSO on its own. There are also technical limitations (e.g., its slow decay time) that may make BSO a less than optimal choice for EIC
