3 Eija TuominenHIP/UH Detector Laboratory October 2010 MISSION  Helsinki Detector Laboratory supports the Finnish research on experimental high energy physics  The Laboratory offers infrastructure and technical support for HIP and UH scientists working in several detector development projects  The only University Laboratory in Finland dedicated to serve detector development – with all due respect to our collaboration with Jyväskylä and Helsinki Accelerator Laboratories, Helsinki Electrical Research Unit, Lappeenranta Physics Laboratory and Aalto University/Nanofab  Currently the Laboratory hosts projects related to CMS and TOTEM experiments at CERN LHC, and Super-FRS experiment at FAIR

4 Eija TuominenHIP Detector Laboratory, October 2010 INFRASTRUCTURE The Laboratory consist of two laboratories (122 m 2 + share of 86 m 2 ) and three clean rooms (class 1000: 105 m 2 + class 100: 20 m 2 ) The Laboratory possesses equipment for R&D, assembly, testing and quality control of microstructures, e.g.: Environmental test chamber, ESPEC ENX12-7.5 Probe Station, Maehlung Profilometer, KLA Tencor P15 Automatic wire-bonder, Delvotec 6400 All the major equipment have been purchased by projects working in the laboratory, or special Finnish Academy infrastructure calls

5 Eija TuominenHIP/UH Detector Laboratory October 2010 PEOPLE  Coordinator: Ms. Dr. Eija Tuominen  Director: Prof. Heimo Saarikko  The laboratory personnel consist of one technician and 1/5 coordinator  The people working daily in the Laboratory are one lady and 13 gentlemen  Te personnel has extensive know-how in R&D, testing and assembly of silicon and gas detectors

6 Eija TuominenHIP/UH Detector Laboratory October 2010 RESOURCES  The laboratory personnel consist of one technician and 1/5 coordinator, while other personnel work within the projects.  The expenditure is financed by annual budget of about 140-150,000 euros.  The annual amount for maintaining and updating the laboratory infrastructure is ~20,000 euros.

7 ACTIVITIES Assembly and testing of 40+10 GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) detectors for CERN TOTEM experiment Finnish Cosmic Muon CRack (FinnCRack) for CERN CMS Tracker software development and silicon detector R&D Transient Current Technique (TCT) setup for CERN CMS silicon detector R&D Education of physics students GEM detector development for FAIR super-FRS diagnostics

8 Eija TuominenHIP Detector Laboratory October 2010 TOTEM activity: Assembly of GEM detectors  A total of 40 + 10 GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) modules are assembled at the Laboratory for the TOTEM T2 telescope.  The multistep process involves e.g. capacitance measurements of the readout board electronics, optical scanning of GEM foil defects and leakage current measurements of the foils prior to final assembly.  The assembly requires also multiple manual steps from preparation of frames to stretching and gluing foils onto the frames, leading eventually to final acceptance tests.

9 Eija TuominenHIP Detector Laboratory October 2010 9 FAIR activity: TPC-GEM -detectors  Helsinki group is responsible of (Time Projection Chamber) -detectors with GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) –readout for the diagnostics of the heavy ion beam in Superconducting Fragment Separator (Super-FRS) in FAIR NuSTAR experiment  The FAIR research group in the Laboratory is involved in the modelling, design, prototyping, construction, testing and commissioning of 32 + spares TPC-GEMs  So far, the first prototype is ready and succesfully tested with heavy ions at GSI FRS beam line together with Comenius University Bratislava (responsible for TPC)  Optical scanning system for the quality control of GEM foils installed and commissioned at Detector Laboratory Clean Room  The optical scanning system is also an important contribution to our participation in CERN RD51 collaboration for the Development of Micro-Pattern Gas Detectors Technologies  GEM stackGEM-TPC in vacuumOptical scannerScanned GEM holes

10 Eija Tuominen 10 CMS activity: Development of Silicon Detectors  Silicon detectors are widely used in high energy physics experiments due to their excellent spatial resolution and well established manufacturing technology  Motivation for our R&D: Radiation environment after the Upgrade of LHC is far beyond the operational limit of existing silicon detectors  We have an own silicon detector manufacturing process at Aalto University Nanofab.  The detectors are characterized at Detector Laboratory, irradiated at Helsinki and Jyväskylä Universities, tested at CERN at by Helsinki Silicon Beam Telescope (SiBT).  We also have an access to large international infrastructure within CERN RD50 and CERN 39 collaborations.

11 Eija TuominenHIP Detector Laboratory October 2010 11 CMS activity: FinnCRack & TCT  FinnCRack, Finnish Cosmic Muon Rack, is a reference telescope based on CMS Tracker Outer Barrel silicon strip detectors measuring tracks of incoming cosmic particles  FinnCRack is a test station providing real data for the testing of the CMS Tracker functionality and for the detector R&D needed for LHC upgrade.  TCT, Trancient Current Technique, is an excellent tool to measure Charge Collection Efficiency (CCE) from silicon detectors  Thus, TCT is an essential tool in the development of radiation hard silicon detectors  Helsinki TCT system includes red laser (670 nm), pulse generator, 3 GHz oscilloscope

12 SUMMARY  Helsinki Detector Laboratory is a facility dedicated to serve Finnish detector development for high energy physics experiments  All the Finnish research projects working with HEP instrumentation are present in Detector Laboratory (e.g.CMS, TOTEM, FAIR Super-FRS)  The Laboratory possesses premises and infrastructure for the design, manufacturing, characterization and quality control of gas and silicon detectors  The current resources consists of 1 technician (being hired), 1/5 coordinator, and 20,000 euros annual budget for the maintenance and development of infrastructure
