Ready, Set, Go! Kindergarten Presentation Preparing for success in kindergarten and beyond

Kindergarten Today Kindergarten has changed since we were young Kindergarten California Standards – ELA dards.pdf dards.pdf – Math rdaug2013.pdf rdaug2013.pdf Parents are their child’s first and most important teacher Partnership between home and school is essential Age should not predetermine Kinder readiness – Your child needs to be ready socially, emotionally, and academically.

It is Not All About Academics.. Gross and Fine Motor Skills-- time to develop large and small muscles Social Emotional—time to develop skills to get along with others, take turns, interact with peers, deal with emotions appropriately, etc. Oral Language—vocabulary development, sentence structure, academic language (foundation for success in reading, writing, and other subject areas)

Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 SB 1381 (Simitian, Chapter 705, Statutes of Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010) –Established Transitional Kindergarten (TK) to prepare California’s youngest children for success in kindergarten and beyond. –Changed kindergarten entry date from December 2 to September 1. –Changed first grade entry date as well.

Transitional Kindergarten Transitional kindergarten is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program that uses a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate. CDE Transitional Kindergarten

Eligibility Dates for the School Year Eligible ClassFifth Birthday Transitional Kindergarten 9/2/11 to 12/2/11 (summer 2011 birthdays can be admitted to TK if appropriate and space permits) KindergartenMust be five years-old by 9/1/16

Kindergarten In MVUSD Each kindergarten teacher has two sessions—Morning and Afternoon This will allow teachers to have a smaller class size in the morning and in the afternoon, with a small overlap with all students TK and Kindergarten will have a different curriculum—Big Day for TK and Journeys or Open Court for English Language Arts for Kindergarten
