2 WELCOME! Today we will help you prepare for a fantastic kindergarten experience!

7 Language and literacy skills as well as speaking and listening skills are essential for children to develop in order to read, write, speak and listen critically. Language Arts

9  Listen to stories  Talk about the pictures  Practice touching each word while reading  Answer questions about the story  Hold books  Find the title & cover of the book How can I help my child? 10 In order for children to become successful in math it is important to develop some basic mathematical skills. Some of these skills include: counting sets of objects with one to one correspondence, knowing the number words and written numbers for 0-5 and sorting objects. Math

11  Counting and Cardinality  Operations and Algebraic Thinking  Measurement and Data  Geometry  Problem Solving Throughout All Content Areas in Math Areas Covered in Math

12  Count to 5 verbally.  Count sets of items to answer, “How Many?’  Recognize numbers 0-5 in their surroundings.  Sort real objects to talk about their likes and differences. For example, size, shape or color. How can I help my child? Encourage your child to:

14 Personal and Social Skills Personal and social skills are the skills children must develop to care for themselves and interact with others. Personal development is how children understand themselves and what they can do. Social development is how children understand themselves in relation to others.

15 Encourage your child to: Share Listen Button and zip their clothing Follow a routine (bedtime, bathing, meals) Share their feelings (be sure to listen to them and ask them to explain) Take turns Try to solve conflicts How can I help my child? Social and Emotional Skills

17 The KRA assessment is used to determine a child’s kindergarten readiness in the following areas:  Language and Literacy  Science  Social Studies  Math  Physical Well Being and Motor Development  Social Foundations The assessment is given over the course of a few weeks by your child’s classroom teacher. Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA)

18 General Information Communication With Teachers Phone Email Notes Talk with your child’s teacher about the best way to get in contact with them. Be patient, they will get back to you as soon as they can. Visiting School Always sign in at the office. Bring your photo ID! Newsletters They have important information about what is going on at school or what is coming up! Kindergarten Orientation Attend the orientation offered at your school in the beginning of the school year! Each school does things a little differently and you will get a lot of valuable information.
