1 WELCOME! How to Prepare your Child for success at Metro Charter Elementary School June 23rd, 2015 GRAND HOPE

2 GRAND HOPE Workshop Objective: The objective for this workshop is to introduce you to our routines and academic procedures, so that you can best prepare your student for success during the upcoming school year.

3 Routines GRAND HOPE What routines are in place in your home? In the morning? At meal times? Chores? At bedtime? Find 4 things in common with your neighbor and 2 differences with your neighbor.

4 GRAND HOPE How do your routines at home translate to success at school?

5 GRAND HOPE Transitional Kindergarten Academics Emphasis on oral language development. Hands-on learning through outdoor/indoor centers. Letter and sound recognition. Number recognition.

6 Kindergarten Academics GRAND HOPE Letter- and sound fluency. Reading 20 sight words. Reading CVC-words (car, sat) Phonetic writing (2 sentences) Numbers 0-100. Addition and subtraction (up to 10)

7 First Grade Academics GRAND HOPE Write one paragraph with 5-7 sentences. Use transitional words. Tell time. Solve word problems. Addition and subtraction with one and two digits.

8 Second Grade Academics GRAND HOPE one step & two step word problems telling time by five minutes Addition and Subtraction with regrouping Measurement: metric and customary (in. ft. yd.) summarizing author's point of view inference/ drawing conclusions Reading and comprehending Non fiction text. 5 sentence paragraph with topic sentence and conclusion.

9 Third Grade Academics GRAND HOPE CAASPP: Ca. Assessment of Student’s Performance and Progress (Beginning of May) Computer skills. Text based evidence. Able to write multiple paragraph essay Searching for facts in non-fiction literature. Multiplication with single and double digits. Division with single digits.

10 Fourth Grade Academics GRAND HOPE CAASPP: Ca. Assessment of Student’s Performance and Progress (Beginning of May) Computer skills. Text based evidence. Able to write multiple paragraph essay Searching for facts in non-fiction literature. Multiplication with double by double digits. Long division

11 GRAND HOPE Convey a positive attitude about school. Make transportation plans clear to the child. Create a normal routine atmosphere at home the first few days of school. Give your child free playtime at home after school. Uses words, not physical action, to express emotions such as anger and disappointment How can I prepare my child for school success?

12 GRAND HOPE How can I prepare my child for school success? Understand and follow 2 step directions Wait and take turns Help your child cope with the occasional frustrations and disappointments in school. Remember that learning to like school and liking to learn are closely related. Avoid comparing this child's school experience with how siblings did when they began at school. Think of yourself as a coach who supports and facilitates your child's healthy development in school

13 GRAND HOPE Skills to practice at home Chores – responsibility & accountability Bathroom hygiene: Flushing, washing hands while singing ABC song. Tying shoe laces Fastening snaps, buttons, and zippers Tying jacket around the waist Opening snack containers/wrappers Reading 20 minutes daily Working on a computer

14 GRAND HOPE Skills to practice at home Draw pictures and have the student tell you a story about what they drew Have your child explain how they knew an answer Have them count how many items you bought at the groceries. Scavenger hunts of different shapes Sort objects by size, shapes, and colors Cutting with scissors Tracing lines and basic shapes Hold a pencil/crayon in a non-fisted grip Recognizing letters & numbers States, write, and read their first and last name.

15 GRAND HOPE Materials needed Uniform Lunch box Snack containers Backpack (fits 9x12 folder) School supplies (pencils, erasers, crayons, color pencils, scissors…) Check teacher’s supply lists/wish lists.

16 GRAND HOPE Summer Activities Visit the local library Go on a picnic. Have the child independently eat his/her lunch or snack. Talk about words in your surrounding. Play number games Visit the grocery store and let the child help with (age appropriate) counting. Read, read, read!!! Summer writing journal. Play games and sports.
