3 Language and Literacy Skills Needed Listen and respond to stories Hold a book correctly Speak in complete sentences Write using drawings and some letters/numbers Identify at least 26 letters of the alphabet (combination of upper and lower case) How Parents Can Help Model reading and writing Read aloud short, simple books; reread favorite stories Use magnetic letters Provide paper, pencils, crayons Sing songs and help children listen for sounds

4 Mathematics Skills Needed Count to 20 Identify and name at least 4 basic shapes Identify numerals 0 to 10 Match a set of objects to the correct numeral Sort objects by color, shape, or size How Parents Can Help Model math in daily life Sing counting games; recite number rhymes; read books about numbers Sort and count household objects Play games Teach phone number and address

5 Social Skills Skills Needed Express wants and needs Follow directions and simple routines Take turns and share Dress and manage bathroom needs Control impulses How Parents Can Help Model listening and speaking skills Reinforce understanding of directions Play games Time with parents and others Set limits; give choices

9 Kindergarten Screening Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) Administered within the first two weeks of kindergarten classes Given individually Provides information about literacy skills Used to identify instructional needs Required by the La. Dept. of Education
