How do Christian beliefs help them decide what job to do? Moral and Immoral Work

Lesson Aim To consider what Jobs a Christian would and would not do To explore the Christian beliefs that lie behind such a decision

Your future ……. When you finish your education what career would you like to go into and why? Are there any jobs that you would never do because you think they are morally wrong? Why?

OccupationReligious Reasons For Religious Reasons against A. UN Soldier B. Gambler C. Doctor D. Stripper E. Sunday worker

Neither Bible nor Church list occupations Christians can and can not do but Christian beliefs affected choices on jobs A key belief is that Christians should help and protect the weak They should also protect animals and use them only for food (as it says in Genesis) and care for the earth This is called STEWARDSHIP – the proper care of the earth and its resources Such beliefs lead Christians towards caring and responsible professions e.g. vet, police, environmentalist They are unlikely to chose a career that exploits people or encourages misuse of resources Unlikely to chose a career that exploits animals Also believe in fair trade so unlikely to work for a company that exploits slave labour Many prefer not to work on Sundays because this should be a day of rest and worship not work God rested (in Genesis) on the Sabbath, so Christians rest on a Sunday and so would avoid working on a Sunday (if they could)

Task (10 Mins) Now use info from your bullets to fill out the table OccupationReligious Reasons For Religious Reasons against UN Soldier UN soldiers keep the peace between people and help the weak in difficult parts of the world. God would approve of this as it shows agape/love. Christianity is all about peace, surely it is wrong to be a soldier and fight? Gambler Christians believe that what you do with your money matters. Rather than Gamble, you should be helping the poor and show good stewardship of your wealth Well, maybe if you win you can then do good with it. Even the Church accepts money from the lottery! Doctor Stripper Sunday worker

“A Job is a Job – it does not matter how people earn their money” (12) W – what is the statement suggesting? A- do you agree W – 3 reasons why you agree O – 3 reasons why you disagree (on other hand) S – so what is your conclusion Your reasons FOR or AGAINST must contain religious arguments and not just your own opinion.
