Evaluate this statement. In your answer you: • should refer to scripture, sacred writings or other religious texts • should give reasoned arguments in support of this statement • should give reasoned arguments to support a different point of view • should reach a justified conclusion • may refer to non-religious arguments.

On the one hand, the death penalty can never be justified because it goes against some of the key Christian teachings from the Bible. This is demonstrated by the quote ‘thou shall not kill’ which means that killing is wrong because human life is sacred (given by God) and only God can take life away. Furthermore, the death penalty does not give the criminal a second chance and a chance to reform their character… Read through the model answer as a class. Students need to use this to identify 5 features that make this a successful answer, e.g. use of connectives. This will help them when it comes to writing their own response. Link back to the mark scheme on the previous slide e.g. it is logical.

6 Write a 12 mark answer Paragraph 1:
On the one hand the death penalty is not justifiable because…. This is demonstrated by… which means... Furthermore… Therefore... Paragraph 2: On the one hand the death penalty is justifiable because…. This is illustrated through…which shows… In addition… So… Hand out the 12 mark writing palettes and connective grids. They need to include everything on their palette. There are also possible sentence starters for students to use if they wish to. Plenary: they need to carefully proof read their work – if time they could read it aloud to the person next to them to check how it sounds and to check punctuation is correct. Conclusion: In my opinion… I strongly believe this because…
