Continents and Oceans There are two main divisions of Earth’s surface. The large land masses are known as Continents and huge water bodies are called Oceans.

Continents There are seven continents. These are separated by large water bodies. These continents are: 1.Asia 2.Africa 3.North America 4.South America 5.Europe 6.Australia 7.Antractica

Asia It is the largest continent and cover one third of the total land area of the Earth.

Africa It is the second largest continent after Asia. World’s largest hot desert Sahara desert and world’s longest river Nile is located in Africa.

North America It is the third largest country of the world. It is linked to South America by a narrow strip called The Isthmus of Panama.

South America It lies mostly in the Southern Hemisphere.

Europe It is much smaller than Asia. The continent lies to the West of the Asia. It is bound by water bodies on three sides.

Australia It is surrounded on all sides by Oceans and Seas. It is called an “Island” continent.

Antarctica It is completely in the Southern Hemisphere and a huge continent. It is located in South Polar region which is permanently covered with thick ice sheets. There are no permanent human settlements.
