Diseases of the Respiratory System ● Chronic Bronchitis- bronchi in the lungs are irritated; coughing and excessive mucous secretion occur. ● Emphysema- destruction of tiny air sacs in the lungs. As the walls between the sacs are DESTROYED, they lose their elasticity and more breaths are required.

Emphysema Neither Emphysema nor lung cancer kills you quickly. Both are SLOW and become painful and debilitating in time. Here is what one lung diseased with emphysema looks like:

Affects of Tobacco ● Addiction – a physical or PSYCHOLOGICAL need for a drug or other substance. ● Withdrawal – unpleasant symptoms that occur when someone stops using an addictive substance. People will get irritable, anxious, depressed, and tired. ● Physiological Dependence – is a type of ADDICTION in which the body itself feels a direct need for a drug. ● Psychological Dependence – is an addiction in which the mind sends the body the message that is needs more of a substance. Perceived effects – extra energy, calmness, control weight.

How to Quit the Use of Tobacco ❖ Set Goals: Set a date to quit, quit for short periods of time, quit for an hour, or day or so. Don’t keep putting it off! ❖ Decide on the best way to be tobacco free, whether it be using gum, the patch, or whatever works. ❖ Change your environment, get rid of anything that reminds you of smoking. Change your friends, get away from anything where tobacco may be around. ❖ Be around people who encourage and support you in quitting. If needs be see a counselor for help.
