1 Tobacco An extremely addictive and harmful drug used for smoking and chewing. (Don’t Smoke!) Andy Wang

2 Here are a few of the ingredients used in cigarettes. Nicotine, the most addictive ingredient. It momentarily causes the smoker to feel good, afterwards causing the smoker to feel worse than before. This makes the smoker want another cigarette. Tar, a thick sticky substance that coats the respiratory system, narrowing the tubes that transport air. Carbon Monoxide, a chemical found in car exhaust fumes. It decreases the oxygen in the blood. Formaldehyde, a poisonous liquid used to preserve dead bodies. Ammonia, a chemical used for cleaning. Cadmium, a poisonous and radioactive metal found in batteries Acetone, a corrosive liquid used in nail polish remover. Arsenic, an ingredient used in rat poison. There are over 4,000 chemicals used in cigarettes.

Higher chance of catching the flu. People under 40 are five times as likely to have a heart attack.

4 Other Tobacco Facts Many people think cigars and chewing tobacco is less harmful than cigarettes, when it is a lot more harmful. Pregnant women who smoke are likely to cause their infants to have low birth weight, health disorders, and even death. Up to 3,000 nonsmoking Americans exposed to tobacco smoke can die of lung cancer. One cigarette contains about 10 mg of nicotine.
