2. What is Tobacco? Nicotine- Addictive drug found in tobacco leaves and in all tobacco products. Addictive- Capable of causing a user to develop intense cravings. Tar- Thick, oily, dark liquid that forms when tobacco burns. Tar deposits on the bronchi, which are passages through which air enters and spreads throughout the lungs. Carbon Monoxide- Poisonous, colorless, odorless gas. Reduces the amount of oxygen the blood cells can carry.

4. Cigarettes Most common form. Smokers are at risk for emphysema and other lung and heart diseases, cancer, infertility and stroke. More than 400,000 people die from smoking related illnesses every year.

5. Cigars and Pipes Cigars contain larger quantities of the same harmful substances as cigarettes. One cigar can contain as much tobacco as one pack of cigarettes. Develop cancer of mouth, larynx, and throat. Pipes are used with loose tobacco.

6. Specialty Cigarettes Bidis- Flavored, unfiltered cigarettes imported from Southeast Asia. Kreteks- Also called cloves are imported from Indonesia. Both can have higher concentrations of nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide than regular cigarettes.

7. Smokeless Tobacco Ground tobacco that is chewed or inhaled through the nose. Nicotine absorbed from smokeless tobacco is 3 to 4 times greater than by a cigarette. Can lead to cancer of the mouth, esophagus, larynx, stomach, and pancreas. It also stains the teeth and causes bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease.
