Mr. Hogan’s 6 th Grade Social Studies Class Welcome Students and Parents!

A little about Mr. Hogan  Graduated Wingate University in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in Sport’s Business Management  Worked in Charlotte for roughly 8 years in commercial construction management  Graduated from UNC-Charlotte in 2010 with a Graduate Teaching Certificate for Social Studies 6 – 12  I have teaching experience at Cannon School, J.M. Robinson, and North Rowan Middle School  I have coached lacrosse at Cannon School for 4 years and will be involved with the Cabarrus Clash.  I am happily married and have a 16 month old son.

My Classroom Philosophy  I am firm but fair  This classroom will be a place where every student will feel safe both physically and emotionally.  The expectations for each student are very high, but attainable in regards to academics and behavior.  The level of expectations placed on the students will increase as the school year progresses.  I welcome open communication from parents via , phone, and conference.  To ensure student success, parents, students, and Mr. Hogan need to be on the same page and the same team.

Basic Expectations  Students will follow all rules outlined in the CMS handbook.  Students will do their best and complete all assigned work.  “The teacher will teach, the students will be students”  After Mr. Hogan informs and demonstrates what the class room rules and acceptable behavior are, students will abide by those rules and behaviors.  Mr. Hogan and the students will be held accountable for their actions.  Students will bring all correspondence home to adults.  “Every day is a new day”

Grading  The newsletter and website will detail my grading policy. The students will be given a syllabus that is to be signed and returned.  Tests count 25%. Quizzes count 15%. Homework counts 10%.  Classwork will be 50% of the grade. If a student chooses to waste time in class it will be reflected on their grade.  On average there will be 1 – 2 homework assignments per week. Often times students will be given an opportunity to finish any class work at home. Mr. Hogan’s policy on late work is listed in the newsletter and syllabus.  My class website is up and running ALL class materials AND due dates will be available online.

Class Materials  Students will need the following items exclusively for Mr. Hogan’s class:  1 – one subject composition notebook  1- notebook to use as a take home notebook (I recommend a 3 – subject notebook)  1 – two pocket folder dedicated to Mr. Hogan’s class  Pens and pencils  Highlighters  These items must be with the students EVERY DAY  Most of these items are listed on the school supply list

Contact Information  The best way to contact me is through at   I can be reached at school by calling  (704) ex  99% of the time I will respond within 24 hours  I ask that all conferences be scheduled in advance. This gives me an opportunity to be fully prepared and dedicate my time fully to the parent conference.
