ESDS Seminar Apr 2009The EU Labour Force Survey 6 2 Key features: LFS has quarterly, annual and ‘multi-annual’ variables –Annual results from quarterly variables possible too: ‘annual averages’ and ‘annual data’ Eurostat gets access to microdata from NSIs LFS: features (continued)

ESDS Seminar Apr 2009The EU Labour Force Survey 10 Part II: Data offer in New Cronos

ESDS Seminar Apr 2009The EU Labour Force Survey 11 4 data groups: Different publication policy Possibly different estimates Structure of New Cronos tree

ESDS Seminar Apr 2009The EU Labour Force Survey 12 EU-LFS data but also from ESTAT national accounts, OECD, etc. Monthly, quarterly and annual data: unemployment, Structural indicators, SDI,… Adjusted LFS time series, annual interpolations Data from 1992 onwards Slot release (4 times a year, around t+120 days) LFS Main indicators

ESDS Seminar Apr 2009The EU Labour Force Survey 13 LFS data as transmitted by NSIs, no corrections Parallel structure for annual and quarterly data Major diffs with main indicators: –New quarters published first here –Old years data may differ (no corrections, no interpolations) LFS detailed tables

ESDS Seminar Apr 2009The EU Labour Force Survey 14 Household data (NEW) Regional data estimated by D2 (NUTS3) from our NUTS2 data –Link here too: LFS specific topics

ESDS Seminar Apr 2009The EU Labour Force Survey 15 Published annually 2004 and 2005 presently published. –Work in progress to publish 2001 and 2004 Some old modules published by other units (see slide num. 7) Ad-hoc modules

ESDS Seminar Apr 2009The EU Labour Force Survey 16 Part III: User requests

ESDS Seminar Apr 2009The EU Labour Force Survey 17 Eurostat receives LFS microdata –We can combine variables at wish –We can produce different indicators than in New Cronos –Huge flexibility to exploit information How much detail we can offer? –Reliability limits –Confidentiality rules (NEW) LFS microdata

ESDS Seminar Apr 2009The EU Labour Force Survey 18 Reliability limits –Data below certain thresholds are unreliable –We can deliver data to users but they can not publish It is OK if they aggregate the data before publication –Reliabiliy thresholds depend on country and year Between 500 persons (CY) and persons (UK) –Data flagged ‘a’ or ‘b’. Data ‘a’ not to be published Data ‘b’ published in a special way Publication guidelines: reliability

ESDS Seminar Apr 2009The EU Labour Force Survey 19 Confidentiality limits (NEW): Data based on 3 or less sample units risk to unveil privacy of people –Corresponds approx to estimated persons Data flagged ‘c’. Data not to be distributed to users –Data deleted from files (exceptions: DGs or Agencies) Observations: –Not possible to know beforehand if an extraction will have data deleted Several iterations may be needed. More work. –Users could get different totals than in New Cronos Publication guidelines: confidentiality

ESDS Seminar Apr 2009The EU Labour Force Survey 20 Please include user name & institution as visible as possible in the messages. –We use it for filing and retrieving old requests We need the LFS form in every request Filling the forms: –Tick with X marks –Please do not use colours.
