Sustainability and the Environment: Climate Change - An Overview Nick Dimbleby

Why Become Energy Efficient?... To Help The Environment! To Help Save Money!

Greenhouse Gasses - CO 2 Carbon dioxide is the most abundant greenhouse gas. Carbon dioxide produced when electricity is generated or when gas, oil or coal is burned is a major contributor to climate change. ¼ of U.K. carbon dioxide emissions comes from energy used in our homes.

From:

Feeling the Effects

UK Species under threat from climate change.

What we are likely to see more of!

The Increasing Cost of Domestic Energy

Don’t let your home get away with it! The facts Every UK household creates about 6 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year Enough to fill six hot air balloons The average home emits more harmful carbon dioxide than the average car.

Energy Saving for Your Business From:

Energy Space and Water Heating Appliance Use ElectricityGasOilOther Electricity Gas (80%) (20%) (% for average 3 bed semi on mains gas.) Where energy is used at home…

What you can do…no cost Turn off lights when not in use Turn off TV rather than using stand-by Turn down heating and hot water thermostats Don’t overfill the kettle Only wash if you have a full load, or use the half load option if you have one Have a shower rather than a bath

Start small… Replace ordinary bulbs with low energy lightbulbs (CFLs) Replace old hot water tank jackets Insulate hot water pipes Eliminate draughts with DIY draught proofing

Bigger savings… Loft insulation To top up from 2” (50mm) to 10” (250mm) can cost as little as £200 through the Cocoon Scheme Insulating your loft with the recommended 250mm can save up to 25% of heat loss from your home.

Bigger savings… Wall insulation The cost of cavity wall insulation through the Cocoon Scheme is from as little as £200 You could save up to 33% of the heat lost from your home Solid walls can be clad internally or externally (no grant currently available)

Bigger savings… Heating & hot water controls Central Heating should have effective controls including, timer/programmer, room thermostat, TRVs. Using controls efficiently can save £60-£70 per year Hot water tank thermostats should not be set over 60 o C Using storage heater controls efficiently can also save energy

Bigger savings… Energy Efficient appliances Old appliances could be wasting up to £45 per year When replacing look for Energy Saving Recommended appliances. Includes fridges, washing machines, light bulbs and boilers

Renewable Energy at Home

Our Future – The Bigger Picture Leave the old fossil fuels where they belong Zero carbon should be our aim Energy efficient homes and businesses Energy from renewable sources that don’t take millennia to replenish Ingenuity of mankind Solutions are available

What is TRDC doing? Successful partnerships with energy suppliers Successful partnerships with expert advisors (MKEA now United Sustainable Energy Agency) Informative Publications – Energy Booklet etc. BMS Working with L.B. Lewisham & Woking B.C.

What is TRDC doing? – cont. Long history of installing condensing boilers State of the art water fittings Commercial condensing boilers at TRH Low energy light fittings Elimination of light pollution Introduction of GSHP Technology

Where are we going? Climate Change Bill Adaptation and Mitigation Climate Change Strategy Local Authorities to lead by example Establishment of Community Partnerships ???
