Unit 4 - Imperialism

Imperialism Imperialism is the domination by a country of the political, economic, or cultural life of another country or region. A colony - is a possession that the imperial power controls directly. A sphere - of influence is a region in which the imperial power claims exclusive investment or trading privileges. A protectorate - is a country that has its own government but whose policies are guided by the imperial power.

The British Empire In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Britain had a vast empire of colonies that included Canada Australia New Zealand India (which included present day Pakistan and Bangladesh) Burma (now Myanmar), Sri Lanka Hong Kong Malaysia Egypt Nigeria Ghana In 1909 the British empire made up 23% of the world population and 20% of its land mass. The ratio of land in Great Britain to land in the British empire was 1:94

The French Empire At the turn of the century, France's empire included: most of West Africa Madagascar Indochina (present day Viet Nam, Laos, and Kampuchea) France controlled more than 1/3 of the territory in Africa.
