6 th grade C8 Review Q & A

What made the Huang He so valuable to ancient Chinese civilization? It helped promote agriculture by depositing silt that made the soil fertile.

How did Chinese writing develop? Marks made by priests on animal bones or shells as a part of a religious ritual became the basis for a Chinese system of writing.

How did Legalists & Daoists differ in their view of society? Legalists believed in strict rules & total obedience to the govt., while the Daoists believed in few rules & instead stressed finding one’s own individual path.

What 5 basic human relationships did Confucius teach? Father/Son, Friend/Friend, Husband/Wife, Ruler/Subject, Elder brother/Junior brother

Which policies of Shi Huangdi caused the greatest resentment among the people? High taxes & the demand for labor from peasants

What advances in govt did the Han make? Han rulers set up a bureaucracy in which many posts were filled on the basis of results of (civil service) exams.

Basic beliefs of Confucianism Proper conduct in all situations, both within one’s family & in society. Confucius described 5 relationships each having its own code of conduct. The basis of all these relationships was respect. At the same time, those who were to be obeyed also had a duty to be respectful, kind & good to those who were required to obey them. Followers of Confucius believed good conduct & respect were key to peace & harmony in society.

Explain why the Qin dynasty lasted such a short period of time He followed the philosophy of Legalism. He set up a strong government that treated most Chinese harshly to endure correct behavior. He killed followers of Confucianism & other critics, burned books, took land from some nobles & forced them to live in the capital where he could keep an eye on them. He also forced peasants to work on the Great Wall and collected high taxes to pay for it, but he wasn’t as strong as his father & the people overthrew him and brought the Qin Dynasty to an end.

Compare & Contrast the reigns of Shi Huangdi (Qin) & Liu Bang (Han) Shi Huangdi: linked small walls into Great Wall Built roads, canals, & other large building projects, set govt stds for weights, measures, coins & writing w/h helped trade & business in China, but he was a HARSH ruler Liu Bang: strong ruler, used military successes to create his empire, reunited China after civil war, less harsh govt, he lowered taxes, demanded less taxes & less labor from peasants

Describe the influence of geography on early Chinese civilization. Chinese civilization developed along the Huang He & the Chang Jiang rivers. These rivers provided the water & fertile soil needed to grow crops. Few invaders from outside could overcome the mountains, deserts, oceans & seas that surrounded it. Goods & ideas from other peoples began to influence China’s development when the Silk Roads were established. They connected China with other parts of Asia, Mesopotamia, & Europe. The Silk Roads brought Buddhism to China & silk & pottery to the rest of Europe. This global trade encouraged the growth of China’s industries, & led to the exchange of ideas & customs as well as goods.
