The Animal Kingdom Characteristics and Key Concepts © 2008 susan anderson

What is an Animal? Animals are multicellular organisms that obtain energy by eating other organisms.

Characteristics of Animals Cellular Organization Cell -> Tissue -> Organ -> System -> Organism Obtaining Food They are heterotrophs/consumers Take food into a body cavity, break it down and absorb it. Reproduction Can be asexual – budding Most are sexual Separate sexes Hermaphroditic

Characteristics continued Movement Most move for a purpose Getting food Reproduction Escaping danger Some do not move at all! (sessile)

How animals meet their needs They must adapt to their surroundings/ find a habitat that provides: Water Food Oxygen Animals MUST respond.

How Certain Animals Get their food (You know these) Herbivores Carnivores Omnivores

Classifying Animals First Step - Invertebrate vs. Vertebrate

Types of Symmetry Radial Jellyfish, starfish, anemone Bilateral Dog, cow, people None Sponges

An Activity – A Tale Told by Tracks Pages 318 and 319 of your text book. Copy the Data Table onto your paper. Look at Section 1 of diagram on page 319. Make 2 or more observations. Make 1 -2 inferences. Do the same with Section 2 and 3. Complete Questions 1-6 on page 319 on the same paper. You must work by yourself.
