Ovulation Activity Partner up! Must be boy and girl partners. Uneven numbers…groups of 3. We will go over these answers in 10 minutes. Start the clock!

Pregnancy

The Developing Baby Blastocyst: early cell division after conception Embryo: developing baby through second month Fetus: developing baby from ninth week until birth

Pregnancy Terms Amniotic Sac: thin, fluid filled membrane that surrounds and protects the developing embryo. Placenta : Thick, blood-rich tissue that lines walls of uterus during pregnancy and nourishes embryo. –Mother & child’s blood DO NOT MIX –Umbilical cord gets oxygen & nutrients from mom to baby –Waste disposal of infant –Must be delivered after baby (afterbirth)

Placenta Picture

Pregnancy Terms Umbilical Cord : Ropelike structure that connects embryo and mother’s placenta –About 1 foot long –Goes from belly button to placenta –Gets cut after expulsion Fetal Ultrasound : non-intrusive technology that uses reflection of sound waves to monitor baby in uterus –Can determine growth –Any abnormalities

Stages of Birth 1) Dilation: contractions of uterus cause cervix to widen and become thinner 2) Expulsion: passage of baby through birth canal 3) Afterbirth: Placenta attached to baby by umbilical cord is delivered

Pregnancy: Twins/Multiple Births

Twins Two or more babies born at the same time are called twins!

Identical Twins Two babies that develop from the same egg and sperm. Develop when one fertilized ovum (egg) divides at an early stage of development and two cells divide and develop separately

Identical Twins Twins are of the same sex who have identical chromosomes, look the same. Monozygotic

Fraternal Twins Fraternal twins occur when two, separate eggs are fertilized by two, separate sperm. Fraternal twins do not share the exact same genes — they are no more alike than they are to their siblings from different pregnancies. Fraternal twins tend to run in some families.

Fraternal Twins These twins may or may not be the same sex and may or may not look alike. Each have their own placenta Dizygotic

Two Sets of Multiples!!

Conjoined/Siamese Twins Starts as one egg Doesn’t completely break off when cells are multiplying The part that is touching is what is fused together.

Miscarriages What happens? A natural ending of a pregnancy before a baby is developed enough to survive on its own

Miscarriages Smoking or using other drugs such as marijuana, crack, heroin, etc. increase the risk of miscarriages. Occur most often during the first trimester. Signs: cramping, severe pain, spotting, and bleeding.
