2. A New Life A new life begins when an egg & a sperm come together. The fertilized egg, zygote, starts moving down the fallopian tube toward the uterus and keeps on dividing. When zygote reaches the uterus it is a ball of cells called an embryo. The embryo then attaches itself to the wall of the uterus. This process is called implantation.

3. Fertilization As soon as one sperm gets in the egg, a membrane closes around the fertilized egg.

4. Before Birth When the embryo implants itself in the uterus, the woman is officially pregnant. The first sign of pregnancy is cease of menstruation. For the embryo to survive, a special two- way exchange organ called placenta begins to grow.

5. Placenta The placenta contains a network of blood vessels that provide the embryo with oxygen and nutrients from the mother’s blood. Wastes that the embryo produces are removed by the placenta and transported to the mother’s blood for her to excrete.

6. Life Support Amnion or amniotic sac: a thin, fluid-filled membrane that surrounds the fetus to protect it from shocks. Umbilical cord: a cord that connects the embryo to the placenta for nutrients and oxygen.

10. Birth After about 9 months, the fetus is ready to live outside of the uterus. At this time, the mother goes through series of muscular contractions called labor. During labor, the fetus is squeezed headfirst through the vagina. The baby is still connected to the mother by umbilical cord. The cut umbilical cord heals to create the navel or belly button.

11. Birth During labor the cervix opens to about 10 cm. The fetus is pushed out of the vagina headfirst

12. Birth The fetus’s head is temporary squashed out of shape as the baby passes through mother’s pelvis

15. After Birth With the first breath, baby starts crying for the first time. The doctor is cutting the umbilical cord.
