Poems are fun to write! It’s pretty easy once you learn. After completing this Webquest, you'll be able to write an acrostic poem, a cinquain, a haiku and many more! In this Webquest, our class will learn 5 different types of poems. Your small group will be responsible for researching an assigned type of poem and teaching that style to the class. After each group has made their presentation, all students will write one or more poems of each type. We will study the following types of poems: Haiku Limerick Cinquain 5 W’s Acrostic INTRODUCTION

Haiku is Japanese poetry that reflects on nature and feelings. You use your observation skills to write what you see in a new or different way. There are three lines with five syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second, and five syllables in the third. Example #1:Example #2: salt-waves caress sandwarm soup in a bowl tickling my toes and heartletters of the alphabet in their short-spun wakehang on the teaspoon Copyright © 2002 Diana Copyright © 2002 Gail Goto RESEARCH: What is Haiku? A limerick is a type of humorous verse. It is always short, often nonsensical, and sometimes ribald. Of unknown origin, the limerick is popular rather than literary and has even been used in advertising. The rhyme scheme of most limericks is usually aabba, as in the following example: There was an old man from Peru, Who dreamed he was eating his shoe. He woke in a fright In the middle of the night And found it was perfectly true. RESEARCH: What is a Limerick? How to Write a Limerick: Write a Limerick: Examples of Limericks: Group 2 – Limerick

A Cinquain is a non-rhyming five-lined poem. Line 1 is the topic of the cinquain, usually a noun. It can be either a two-syllable word or two single syllable words. Line 2 is four syllables that describe the topic (adjectives). Line 3 is six syllables that show action (action verbs). Line 4 is eight syllables. This line can be a sentence or words that express feeling. Hermit Crab By Elizabeth Vetter Hermit Crab Hard, mad Crawling, peeking-out, digging He crawls in another shell. Pinching Crab RESEARCH: What is a Cinquain? Write a Cinquain. Read this link, then try to write your own Cinquain! Group 3 – Cinquain (sin-cane)

Line 1 Who?Line 2 What? Line 3 When?Line 4 Where?Line 5 W hy? Breakfast My mom Made breakfast In the morning At home Like she always does. RESEARCH: Examples of 5W’s: What is a 5W? Read this link, then write your own! Group 4 – 5 W’s (Who, What, When, Where, Why)

An acrostic poem is a very fun poem for kids. Each acrostic poem has a topic idea running down the left side of the poem. Each letter in the topic word has a new thought that runs off the side from left to right and is relevant to the topic word. The topic word is typically the title as well. For example…If you were writing an acrostic poem with the topic word "pumpkin" the title would be pumpkin and each line of the poem would start with one of the letters in the word SPRING. Spring by Kaitlyn Guenther S o many flowers are blooming. P etite little squirrels come out to play. R eally big bears awake from their slumbers. I maginative children enjoy a walk with their friends. N o tree is left standing without any leaves. S o G o ahead, jump for joy because spring is here. RESEARCH: Examples of Acrostics: Click on this link, print, and write an acrostic using the word TEACHER: Group 5 - Acrostic
