Researchers have discovered that peer networks may help make the net work better - and more beautifully. MIT's Technology Review ran an article about mapping the internet - by Duncan Graham-Rowe. It follows research done to work out how the internet is organized, being conducted by researchers at Bar Ilan University. Those that are shareholders in the school should have a voice in the discussion. Social Networks Facebook and MySpace are two of the most prominent and widely used networks. They allow people to interact easily across the world. Podcasts are content-based tutorials that can build communication skills including speaking to an audience and writing. Thousands are available already and cover all subject areas. Visual presenters and Document Cameras (ELMO) is an example of a projections device that allows the teacher to project a real book page, a computer screen shot or physical article onto the screen. Some of the devices have microscope capabilities. The screen can also be used as a projectable writing surface. The image can be “saved” for later. 6/10/201610Kathie Carwile Morgan, Ed.D.

Interactive white boards (Promethean, Smartboard) allow the teacher to use the surface as a writing space and to then “copy and save” for use at a later time. The handwriting on the board either numbers can be brought up for further work. Digital cameras provide instant records and evidence of events. Most tiny cameras can record video making use in the classroom easier than it has ever been. Pictures download to the computer automatically. 6/10/201612Kathie Carwile Morgan, Ed.D.

Smart phones can be used to call, text, photograph, and access the web; they contain a GPS and satellite capabilities. Students should not be allowed to use these during class, but they could be very useful to the teacher. 6/10/2016Kathie Carwile Morgan, Ed.D. 13

Wikis are user created “encyclopedia-like” entries on the Internet that link directly to related topics or topics mentioned in entry, i.e. Wikipedia. They can be done in the classroom using programs such as Google Documents, that allow multiple people to access the document.
