SmartBoard and iPad Collaboration by: Julie Roger, Andrea Devere, Gina Krueger and Case Gardner

A tablet manufactured by Apple o A tablet is a small, flat electronic device, usually slightly smaller than a standard piece of paper and less than an inch thick This tablet runs off of a wireless internet connection (or wireless data, in some models) The tablet allows access to internet browsers, as well as a multitude of apps, including educational applications.

Can be remotely connected to a computer to allow access to a projector (some projectors can be directly connected through WiFi). There are many applications that can be downloaded and used in and out of the classroom o Some apps have different interactive activities that can be done o There are apps for teachers to create video tutorials that include voice, video, sketch pad, pictures, etc. Tutorials can then be disbursed to student electronically

E-textbooks can be downloaded on an iPad for the students to use o E-books can be highlighted in, figures drawn, notes taken in, etc. This can be done without damaging the books for other students, as would happen with a traditional book. Gives students easy and immediate access to internet during class, allowing them to look up pertinent information during lecture Student can take notes with diagrams, drawings, text, etc. like a traditional notebook, but have the ability to save it online (in different programs such as Evernote) so that they can access it at anytime. There is a huge amount of educational applications that can be downloaded and used in the classroom.

Costs for schools o Using iPads within schools is quite costly o However, it has its benefits and disadvantages o While the iPad offers students a new way to encompass the internet and e-books, it is wondered if the cost is worth it o School district investors in 2011 put in 389 million dollars aside for iPads in the K-12 education system

How is this a new literacy? o The iPad is considered a new literacy because it allows students to download textbooks as e-books, therefore they can read them electronically o Using an e-book is effective because they can support and enhance a reader's comprehension abilities o It is essentially a new literacy because in order to use it, one must use different skills and strategies in order to correctly use and navigate it

A Smart Board is a new type of interactive whiteboard made by Smart Technologies It allows users to operate through touch recognition and Smart software It is essentially a large touch screen monitor with a computer to run the software http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0U0 5WeXPGlkhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0U0 5WeXPGlk

SMART Notebook- Most widely used software for the product o An interactive tool that allows teachers to create engaging lesson plans o Features: fully interactive touch screen, digital dry- erase board, access to anything on the desktop, sound and animation o For a demonstration click herehere SMART Classroom Suite o A collaborative tool that o Features: link student computers, collaborative activities, quiz/response functions, classroom management functions

Cost for one unit can range from around $5,000 to o Depends on model and additions like response clickers, speakers, multi-touch/single-touch functionality, etc. K-12 schools usually need to obtain outside funding to supply multiple classrooms with SmartBoards o Grants- at the district level o Fundraising- at the school level

Smart Board uses some of the most user- friendly, interactive technologies we have ever seen To use the Smart Board, one must become familiar with Smart Technologies’ software, designed for the Smart Board –This software is rather intuitive, it is made to be easily learned and operated by teachers, students, and working professionals alike
