Walter, Zak, Kitana, and Chynna PHOTOSYNTHESIS RATE

Question and Hypothesis Question- How do different liquids affect photosynthesis? Hypothesis- If we test the rate of photosynthesis using different liquids, then sugar water will speed up the process the most because sugar is a product of photosynthesis.

Materials Five 500 milliliter beakers Ten Test Tubes 75 grams of salt 75 grams of sugar Baking soda Scale Safety Goggles Tap water 10 inches of elodea Black marker( For marking level of bubble.) Ruler

Procedure 1) Gather your materials 2) Fill medium sized beaker to 500 Milliliters of water and.8 grams of baking soda. For sugar and salt, put in 25 grams and 50 grams for every 500 milliliters. You will also need to create a control by adding just water to a beaker and test tube. 3) Put elodea in a test tube. About an inch in each test tube Fill the test tube full of water, for the salt and sugar tests, pour some of the liquid into test tubes filled with elodea. Stir Beaker 4) Using your thumb, plug the top of the test tube. You want to get a good seal on it so you don't allow air bubbles in test tube. 5) Flip the test tube 180 degrees and put it into beaker without getting air bubbles into it. It helps if a member of your group has small hands. You will want to submerge your hand into the water before releasing your hand from the top of the test tube. 6) If you do have air bubbles, measure the size. And put some type of mark on the test tube. 7) Let sit for 48 hours. 8) After 48 hours, measure the air bubble size in the test tube. 9) Repeat steps 2-8 using designated liquid. 10) For salt and sugar, make one of the beakers with 25 grams and the other with 50 grams

Experimental Data

Research Conclusion Our hypothesis was; If we test the rate of photosynthesis using different liquids, then sugar water will speed up the process the most. So our hypothesis was supported by the data because the sugar had a clear distinction from the other types of solutions. The difference of tap water to our 25 mL sugar water was 3 1/2 cm. The difference of tap water to our 50 mL sugar water was 1/2 cm. The difference of 25mL salt water to our 25 mL sugar water was 4 cm. The difference of 50 mL salt water to 50 mL sugar water was 9 cm. We think that this may have happened because sugar is a product of photosythesis.
