3 Investigating the Solids
Measure one spoon of each mystery solid. Observe each solid. Fill out the properties chart for each solid. Vocabulary: physical property, solid, hand lens. 5/30/2019

4 Water Test Measure one spoon of the red solid.
Place it in the middle of the red space on your mat. Wipe off the spoon and put it back. Put the jar back. Put 6 drops of water on the red solid. Observe what happens. Use your toothpick to stir the solid and the liquid together. Break your toothpick when done. Observe. Record your observations. Repeat these steps for each of the other colors. Question: What will happen if I add 6 drops of water to each solid? Hypothesis: If I add 6 drops of water to each solid then some of them will dissolve and some will not because some solids dissolve in water. Procedure: solids, water Measure each solid and place on mat. Add 6 drops of water to each and observe. Results:Red-Dissolves, liquid clear. Yellow-Dissolves, liquid is clear. Green- Does not dissolve, water beads up. Blue – Dissolves, liquid is cloudy. Orange – Dissolves, liquid is cloudy. Conclusion: The red, yellow, blue, and orange dissolve in water and are soluble. The green does not dissolve and is insoluble. New Question: What if I add more water? 5/30/2019

6 10 ml Water Test Make the filter holder using a cup and toothpicks.
Label your filters with a colored dot. Check to see that your Petri dish has colored dots on top and bottom. Put the red cup on the red circle. Fill the dropper and put 10ml of water in the cup. Then measure the red solid. Stir the mixture with the toothpick for 30 seconds. Observe. Add two more spoons, one at a time. Stir. Observe. Set the cup on the tray and repeat the steps for the other colors. Fill out your observation sheet. Place the red filter in the filter holder you made. Place the holder in the red petri dish. Stir the mixture and then pour it into the filter. Repeat. Vocabulary: mixture, solution, suspension, filtration 5/30/2019

Question: What will happen when I add 10ml of water to each solid? Hypothesis: If I add 10ml of water to the solids then some of them will form mixtures and some will form a suspension, because that is how solid powders react to water. Procedure/Materials: water, solids, filters, filter holders, petri dishes. Add 3 spoons of solid powders to 10ml of water. Pour into filters and let drain into the Petri dish. Observe. Conclusion/Results: The Red formed a solution and is clear. The yellow dissolves, liquid is clear. Some powder on the bottom. It is both. Green does not mix easily. It does not dissolve. It is a suspension. Blue dissolves, and is clear. Some of powder at the bottom, it is both. Orange does not dissolve; liquid is white. It is a suspension. Conclusion: The red was a solution. The green and the orange are suspensions. The yellow and blue are both. New Question: What if I add something else to the solids? 5/30/2019

9 Filtration Test Results
Red: Filter paper is empty. Sticky mass in dish. Separates by evaporation. Yellow: Filter paper has some residue. Crystals are in the dish. Separated by filtration and evaporation. Green: Filter paper is full; dish is empty. Separated by filtration. Blue: Filter paper has some powder. There is a white film and some crystals in the dish. Separated by evaporation and filtration. Orange: Filter paper is full. Dish is empty. Separated by filtration. 5/30/2019

10 Vinegar Test Get your materials including a bottle of vinegar.
Remember to wear your goggles! We will use the compare circle for this activity. Measure the red solid as usual. Place a small amount of the red solid in the compare circle as well as in the circle as usual. The control, or compare circle lets us see what the chemical looks like before we add anything to it. Add 6 drops of vinegar to the powder in the large red circle. Stir gently. Break your toothpick. Observe and write. Remember to put your spoon back as soon as you finish. Continue with the other colors. Vocabulary: control, chemical change,reaction. 5/30/2019

Vinegar Test Question: What will happen if I add 6 drops of vinegar to the solids? Hypothesis: If I add vinegar to the solids then some of them will bubble and fizz because that is how some chemicals react to vinegar. Procedure/Materials: vinegar, solids Place 6 drops of vinegar onto each solid. Stir and observe. Results: Red dissolves. Yellow dissolves. Green does not dissolve, beads up, cloudy. Blue dissolves; fizzes and bubbles. Green does not dissolve; liquid is cloudy. Conclusion: The blue solid was the only one that had a chemical reaction to the vinegar. New question: What will happen if I add some other chemical? 5/30/2019
