Volume Activity The Relationship between Centimeters Cubed and Milliliters

Purpose Determine a graphical and mathematical relationship between the units cm 3 and mL. The independent variable is centimeters cubed (cm 3 ) and the dependent variable is the milliliters (mL).

Hypothesis Predict what you think will be the end result of this experiment: Vcm 3 is equal to VmL Vcm 3 is less than VmL Vcm 3 is more than VmL

MATERIALS 1) Marker 2) Container (cube or rectangular prism) 3) Water 4) Graduated cylinder 5) Metric ruler What are #4 & 5 used for?

APPARATUS Create your drawing of the procedure to show how to do something. (Usually its how to set up or use the equipment.) mL

LAB VOCAB 1) cm 3 = volume units for a solid object, has 3 dimensions 2) mL = volume units for a fluid (gas or liquid) 3) Graduated cylinder= tool for measuring the volume of liquids 4) Meniscus= a curved line created at the top of a liquid when measuring with a graduated cylinder 5) Equation; Volume= Area * Height

PROCEDURE 1. Gather materials. Write the type of container you have here and the equation for how to find its area; ______________________________________ 2. Measure the length and width of the container or its radius and find its area. 3. Record the area in the data table. 4. Put 1 cm of water into the container. 5.Pour the 1 cm of water from the container into the graduated cylinder and record the volume in mL.

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 using the following heights of water: 2 cm, 3 cm, 4 cm, and 5 cm. 7. Calculate the Vcm 3 for water by multiplying the area times the height. Record it in the appropriate data column. 8. Graph the data. What goes on the graph?

DATA Centimeters Cubed Compared to Milliliters Area (cm 2 ) HEIGHT V WATER (cm 3 ) V WATER (mL) 1 cm 2 cm 3 cm 4 cm 5 cm

GRAPH Centimeters Cubed Compared to Milliliters Volume (mL) Volume (cm 3 ) Dependent Variable Name & units Independent Variable Name & Units

DATA EVALUATION Answer the Data Evaluation Questions 1-5 Then STOP!

CONCLUSION Answer the Conclusion Question Discussion What value did you derive for the slope?
