Artifact Culture Hominid Paleolithic Age Neolithic Age Technology Homo Sapiens

Artifact: Remains, such as tools, jewelry and other human-made objects. Culture: People’s unique way of life Hominid: Humans and other creatures that walk upright, such as Australopithecines. Paleolithic Age: Earlier and longer part of the Stone Age. 2.5 million B.C. to 8000 B.C. Neolithic: New Stone Age. Began in 8000 B.C. and lasted until 3000 B.C. Technology: Ways of applying knowledge, tools and inventions to meet their needs Homo Sapiens: Species named for modern humans. Means “wise men”.

Prehistory – Time before the invention of writing. Artifacts – remains such as tools, jewelry, and other human-made objects. Culture – People’s unique way of life.

Anthropologist Study culture Examine artifacts Show people’s cultural behavior Customs Family life Social relationships Study fossils Evidence of early life preserved in rock Human fossils Date fossil remains and rocks Paleontologists

Paleolithic Age 2.5 million to 8000 B.C. Oldest stone chopping tools Neolithic Age 8000 B.C. to 3000 B.C. Polish stone tools Farm Pottery Raise animals

Australopithecines: 3.5 million years ago Walk upright Opposable thumb Carry food and children

Means “man of skill” Tools made of lava rock Used tools to cut meat

Upright man More intelligent and adaptable Increased technology: Applying knowledge, tools and inventions to meet need First Hominids to migrate (India, china, Southeast Asia and Europe) First to use fire

Neanderthals Fossilized bone fragments found in Neander Valley Germany, 1856 Lived between 300,000 and 30,000 years ago Shelter of wood and animal skins Hunted in subarctic Europe Used blades, scrapers and other tools to skin prey Disappeared about 30,000 years ago

Cro-Magnon 40,000 years ago Planned hunts Population grew Advanced skill in spoken language

Mary Leakey: found hominid fossil in Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania Donald Johanson: found complete skeleton of adult female and named her Lucy
