Presentation transcript:

Lucky You! You’re in Advanced Painting and Drawing and it will be your favorite class of the day! Why? Because the art problems are challenging but engaging enough that you will really get into them, losing track of time and everything else as you start thinking like a real artist. WELCOME BACK!

As an 11 th grade, Advanced Art student, you are on track to take AP Studio Art next year. This is a chance for the artistic student to excel and receive recognition on a national level. It helps you prepare an excellent portfolio for college applications. If you score a 4 or 5 on your portfolio you may receive college credit. In addition, students applying to competitive private colleges but NOT majoring What’s in it for you?? in art are showing their AP portfolios as part of their interview process. Your portfolio demonstrates a dedicated exploration of a subject at the high school level. Colleges are very interested in seeing this level of discipline.

But the AP Portfolio is a lot of work – very cool to do – but a lot of work. It’s too much to complete all the requirements in one year. That’s where this advanced class comes in! The work you do this year will also be part of your senior portfolio so make it good! Intro to P & D was a building year working with a variety of media, developing drawing skills and working with the elements and principles of design. This year, you should be ready for a more in depth art challenge. Pre AP?

We will explore three important categories of art in history: Still Life Portraits and Figure Studies Landscape. We will look at each category in terms of its development through art history, especially art from the 1800’s through the contemporary periods. We will use both traditional and contemporary media to produce works of art in each category Each category will have a series of projects, papers and sketchbook assignments allowing you to thoroughly explore the theme so as to develop a mini- concentration similar to what you will be expected to do independently next year in AP Studio. Three Big Units….

Unit 1: Color and the Principles of Design

Unit 2: The Still Life….

Unit 3: The Portrait and Figure…

Unit 4: The Landscape….

SKETCH BOOK FRIDAYS!!!!! EVERY Friday we will put our current project aside and work in our sketch books. These Friday experiences will be graded and will be a combination of teacher driven and individually driven ideas.

You can’t create in a vacuum. You need to know something about the world of art in order to make good decisions about your own art. Therefore there will be some lessons and assignments about art and art history. You are expected to take notes on lectures and demonstrations in your sketch book You will have written assignments You will have drawing assignments as homework You will be required to participate in and attend the High School Art Show in May. This is part of your final exam grade Requirements

Sketchbooks, drawing and painting media and a portfolio will be provided. If you have trouble meeting your due dates for projects you may come in after school on Studio Hour nights or any other night with special arrangements. You may also come in during any study hall. Other Items of Interest…

You will, of course, be expected to follow the MHS expectations of : Be Responsible (for your work, your materials and the art room), Be Respectful (to each other, to me and to the art room environment) and Be Proud of all you do in here! Behavior….

Procedures 1.Please come to class on time and put your belongings on the shelves provided. 2.Get your portfolio, your project and your supplies and sit in your assigned seat. 3.Listen carefully whenever directions, demonstrations or teacher comments occur. Setting goals about what you want to learn, how you want your art to improve, where you’d like to see yourself as an artist, the grade you hope to get in this course, etc. will help you focus and get the most you can out of this year. After some beginning activities I will be asking you to set some art goals for yourself….. Setting Goals… Art Goal: Art Grade: Behaviors:

I’m happy you are here!! Let’s Make Art!
