Geographical Regions of Asia South Asia Southeast Asia East Asia

Asia Asia lies in the Northern and Eastern Hemispheres where Climates range from Arctic to tropical.

South Asia South Asia includes: BangledeshBhutanIndiaMaldivesNepalPakistan Sri Lanka

Regions of South Asia The Northern Mountain Rim This region is made up of several mountain ranges. The Hindu Kush are located to the west between the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan The Himalayas are located to the east The Karakoram Mountains lie between the other 2. These mountains geographically separate the subcontinent of South Asia from the rest of Asia.

Regions of South Asia The Northern Plains Lie between the Himalayas and southern India Ganges and Indus River valleys are included in this region. These rivers form large deltas where they empty into the sea. The Ganges flows through Bangladesh and empties into the Bay of Bengal. The Indus River flows through Pakistan and empties into the Arabian Sea. This region floods during the rainy season bringing rich sediment from the Himalayas. What does this result in?

Regions of South Asia Deccan Plateau This area makes up most of southern India There are mineral deposits Forests in this region are the home to roaming elephants The Western Ghat Mountains border the plateau to the west and The Eastern Ghat Mountains to the east. The Western Ghats have higher peaks reaching 8,000 ft. on the southern tip of India. A coastal plain runs between the mountains and the coast. Fewer people live here as the soil is not as rich and the rainfall is unreliable.

Regions of South Asia Sri Lanka and the Maldives Sri Lanka is an island that lies just south of India. It is a picturesque and mountainous region and parts receive a great deal of rain. The Maldives is an archipelago made up of 1200 coral islands called atolls. People live on 300 of these. Elevation only goes up to about 6 feet above sea level. What kind of problems might this cause?

Climate of South Asia Most of this region has 3 seasons: CoolHotRainy The higher the elevation, the cooler the weather. Why? Frost sometimes forms in the Northern Plains, but most of southern India is hot year round. From June to October, monsoons coming from the southwest, bring heavy rains to South Asia. November through February brings cool, dry weather while March through May, the weather is very humid.

Natural Disasters in South Asia This region has seen many natural disasters. They include: FloodingEarthquakesTsunamidrought

Southeast Asia Includes:BruneiCambodiaIndonesiaLaosMalaysia Myanmar (Burma) PhilippinesSingaporeThailandVietnam

Regions of Southeast Asia Mainland Southeast Asia The mainland lies on the Indochinese and Malay Peninsulas. The Mekong River drains more than 313,00 sq. miles starting in the highlands of the Plateau of Tibet and empties into the South China Sea after flowing through Laos, central Cambodia and Vietnam. This area is densely populated and produces a great deal of rice.

Regions of Southeast Asia Islands of Southeast Asia The archipelagos of Indonesia and the Philippines lie in this region. Indonesia has the 4 th largest population in the world and is made up of 17,000 islands that were formed by volcanoes. These islands have a tropical climate

East Asia This region includes: China Japan Mongolia North Korea South Korea Taiwan

Regions of East Asia CHINA The Himalayas run along the southwestern part of China separating it from Nepal. Mount Everest in the Himalayas at 29,035 is the highest peak in the world. The Plateau of Tibet spreads across ¼ of China and is the highest plateau in the world and is called “the roof of the world”. China’s 3 great rivers are the Huang He (or Yellow River because of the fine silt that covers the plains along parts of the river), the Chang Jiang, and the Xi Jiang. They start in the highlands and flow east with the Chang Jiang being the longest., the Chang Jiang, and the Xi Jiang. They start in the highlands and flow east with the Chang Jiang being the longest. The Huang He is also called “China’s Sorrow” because so many lives have been lost in its floods.

Regions of East Asia China’s desserts The Taklimakan and the Gobi are the 2 desserts found in China. The Taklimakan is one of the world’s largest sandy desserts located in northwestern China. The Gobi lies to the east of it. Temperatures can range from 113 to -40 degrees fahrenheit. In Mongolian, gobi means “waterless place”. Spring dust storms with the strength of hurricanes occur frequently.

Regions of East Asia Japan Japan consists of an archipelago that stretches 1500 miles across the Pacific Ocean. Honshu is the largest island and home to Japan’s capital, Tokyo. Honshu is the largest island and home to Japan’s capital, Tokyo. Japan sits atop 2 tectonic plates that often sink below a 3 rd plate resulting in a higher occurrence of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes than other places on earth. Because of fault lines, the mountains aren’t ranges, but rather blocks separated b lowlands. The Kanto Plain, where Tokyo lies, is the largest stretch of lowlands in Japan.

Regions of East Asia Japan Mount Fuji, an active volcano, is the tallest mountain in Japan and part of the Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire is an area of volcanic activity along the borders of the Pacific Ocean.

Regions of East Asia Japan Japan records as many as 1500 earthquakes in a year. Japan’s climate is controlled by monsoons. In the winter it brings cold rain and snow to the west coast and in summer, they bring warm rain to the south and east. Typhoons can occur from summer to early fall.

Regions of East Asia The Koreas Both North and South Korea lie on the Korean Peninsula. It is filled with mountains and valleys. The Yalu and Tumen rivers mark the border between North Korea and China. A temperate climate provide cold, dry winters, and hot, humid summers. Most rainfall is between June and September as a result of the monsoons. South Korea is a mix of rugged mountain ranges, coastal plains and river valleys. Main rivers include the Han, the Kum and the Naktong.

Conclusion Influence of physical characteristics and physical processes The physical characteristics of Asia are a result of many physical processes including earthquakes, erosion, and flooding. How do these characteristics influence patterns of settlements among people? How do these characteristics result in human- environment interaction? How is economy influenced by physical features?
