Radiation Protection Authority of Zimbabwe

IAEA 6 Core Questions, Legislative and Governmental Responsibilities, Responsibilities and Functions of the Regulatory Body, Organization of the Regulatory Body, Activities of the Regulatory Body: Authorization, Inspection and Enforcement, Development of Regulations and Guides Management System for the Regulatory Body, CoC 2004 Questions, Control of Medical Exposure, Emergency Preparedness and Response, Occupational Radiation Protection, Public and Environmental Exposure Control, Waste Management, Transport of Radioactive Material Modules for Cycle 1&2

IAEA 7 Core Questions, Occupational exposure control Control of Medical Exposure Public and Environmental Exposure Control Emergency Preparedness and Response Safety and Security of Sources Transport of Radioactive Materials Modules for Cycle 3(SARIS)

IAEA 8 Challenges: Training / understanding: training has got to be hands-on and it was difficult to get the whole team together and train them at once. In the end two teams were set up and training delivered separately. Personnel: large numbers of personnel needed if you are to strictly have responders and analysers distinctly different. Time: completing the 1 st cycle is really time consuming Involving other organisations in the self-assessment was difficult

IAEA 9 Achievements Self-assessment results co-opted as one of the organisation’s performance indicators in annual performance appraisal as part of Results Based Management Ability to track achievements (very motivating) and outstanding areas (systematically points to areas that need attention) Better awareness and appreciation of the regulatory infrastructure, roles and responsibilities of the regulatory body by the Radiation Protection Board and the Government Improved staff knowledge of the IAEA Standards, improved support from the fiscus, improved Government commitment, Strategic Plan ( ) Improved organisational structure and staffing levels Team building Effective independence of the regulator through the re-assignment of the Act from the Minister of Health to the Minister for Presidential Affairs Initiation of the process of revision of the Act to make it more comprehensive and further align it with international standards

IAEA THANK YOU
