2015 MHS TRACK & FIELD PARENT MEETING

Introductions: Coaches: Nick White – Sprints & Jumps Landon Harris – Distance Bubba Hooker – Throws David BeShears – Pole Vault & Multi Events Kristy Neimeyer –Sprints & Distance Brandon Waters – Throws & Weight Training Thomas Headrick – Hurdles Julie Young – Hurdles & Athletic Trainer

Program Philosophy: We believe that track and field is a team sport. We always coach and make decisions with the team’s best interest in mind. Some believe that track and field is an individual sport and their goals should be separate from everybody else’s and what they do does not affect the rest of the team. We believe being a positive, contributing member to the team is more important than anything else we coach kids to do. An athlete doing workouts different from the team, not showing up for team practices and meets and putting themselves before the team are actions that will not be tolerated. We will always put athletes in positions for not only their interest, but also, and more importantly, the team’s. I would much rather take a relay team to the sectional meet and state meet than an individual in what they consider “their event.”

Not all track and field athletes will be going to every meet. We will let each athlete know at least a couple of days in advance if they are going. If you are on the roster to go to a meet, you are expected to go! We will work with athletes on practices to allow them to do other things, but meets are different. Keep this fact in mind.

Meet Info: 1. All track athletes must ride the bus to away meets, except those at WBHS, that are held after school. 2. After your athlete is done competing, he/she can leave the meet only with a parent or guardian after a coach has talked with the parent/guardian. 3. A line-up for each meet will be posted a couple of days in advance to notify those who will be competing. If an athlete cannot go, it is up to them to let me know ASAP, so I can put someone in their spot. 4. If a meet is on a Saturday, we will take a bus, but athletes can get there on their own if they choose. The bus will leave early in the morning and those that ride it will be there all day. 5. All the meets in which we run will be F.A.T. (Fully automatic timed), so all the results can be used to attempt to qualify for the sectional meet. 6. We will not be hosting any home high school meets due to the lack of necessary facilities and F.A.T. equipment.

Important Paperwork: 1. Physical Form – All athletes must have a physical after May 1 st, Parent Consent Form 3. Concussion Form ALL MUST BE TURNED IN BEFORE FEB. 9 th IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO PRACTICE AT THE TRACK!

Absences: Our coaching staff will work with you and your athlete to the best of our ability in the event he/she needs to miss practice or a meet. However, our loyalty is to the track team and we will make decisions with the team’s best interest in mind. Repeated absences from practices and/or meets will be dealt with. He/she has to be present to get better! If your athlete is on a relay team and miss a meet, a replacement will have to be put in their place. If that team runs a faster time with the replacement in, he/she will take your athlete’s spot.

Costs: We do not require athletes to pay to be on the track & field team. It is completely free to run track. The only thing a track athlete will have to purchase is their shoes, and we do a Nike order for track shoes that cost 40% off the price. Because we do not charge a team fee to be on the team, we ask the members to do some basic, easy fund raisers to offset costs. Most track teams in the area charge hundreds of dollars in team fees.

Fund Raisers: 1. 5 for $50.00 – athletes will be asked to raise at least $50.00 each in sponsorship money to walk 5 laps. If the team goal of $3, is reached, we will have a celebration one day after practice. 2. Pancake Breakfast – athletes will be asked to sell 5 tickets for $5.00 each. The team goal is $1, Middle school track meets – we will host 1 possibly 2 middle school track meets at the Junior High track. Our athletes and parents will run the events, time, sell tickets and do concessions. 70% of the money made goes to our track team. These funds will be used to pay for uniforms, buses, and necessary equipment like spikes, shot puts, discs, batons, medicine balls, bullet belts, parachutes, hurdles, etc.

Sectional Track Meet: In order to qualify for the sectional track meet, each individual athlete or relay team has to meet a qualifying standard set by our Section. The better the qualifying mark or time, the better the seed will be in the sectional meet. State Track Meet: The top 4 finishers in each event qualify for the state track meet at MTSU. Prelims for the girls are on Wednesday, May 20 th with finals on Thursday, May 21 st. Prelims for the boys are on Thursday, May 21 st with finals on Friday, May 22 nd. Field event finals are on Thursday for the girls and Friday for the boys. They have no prelims.

Mountain Brook Invitational – Birmingham, AL: Friday, April 10 th and Saturday, April 11 th We will leave Friday morning around 9:00 a.m. by bus from the school. I will inform the teachers who will be leaving, but the athletes need to communicate with their teachers to make sure they are aware and that any missed work is taken care of. We will drive half way and stop to eat and stretch our legs, then continue on into Birmingham. The prelims start around 4:00 p.m. on Friday and the finals at around 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. When the meet is over, we will come home Saturday night. As more information comes out about the meet, I will pass it along. We are asking those who qualify to go to this meet pay $30.00 to offset costs. We expect to take 52 athletes. The bus is going to cost over $1, and the rooms over $1, The track team will pick up the rest of the bill. Athletes will need to bring money to eat lunch and dinner for both Friday and Saturday. We will find a hotel with a free breakfast for Saturday morning.

Discipline: Fortunately, I usually do not have to deal with very many discipline issues on the track team. However, in the event I have to deal with any problems, I will contact a parent/guardian immediately and let you know. The usual issues that we have to deal with are absences, tardys, academics and misbehavior in class. Each individual case will be dealt with based on severity and frequency. The more severe the offense and/or frequency the worse the punishment. If I cannot get an athlete to do what is expected by the MHS track & field program, the end result could be suspension or dismissal from the team.

Eating Habits: One of the most over looked parts of track & field at the high school level is proper eating & drinking habits. The track athletes who excel are the ones who figure out this fact. Another misconception is only distance athletes need to worry about what they eat and drink. In order for your athlete to be at their best, they have to drink tons of water, no soft drinks, no tea, ect. Also, they need to be eating foods high in protein and carbs depending on the day and where it falls in line with competition. Track is a physically demanding sport and requires kids to have fuel in their system to get through the grind, and the fuel needs to be healthy. We preach about this fact to them constantly, but it needs to be reinforced at home as much as possible.

Nike Sponsorship: Our track team is a Nike sponsored team, so when we compete in meets everything that is worn that has a logo has to be a Nike logo. No Under Armour, Adidas, etc., except for shoes. Track athletes can wear any type of shoe they want. During practice it does not matter what they wear, but when we compete for MHS, the logo has to be Nike or nothing at all. In short, it’s either a Nike logo or no logo.
