 Borderline Personality Disorder – Is a condition in which people have long term patterns of unstable or turbulent emotions, such as feelings about themselves and others. Characterized by many patterns of instability, lost in relationships, moods and sense of identity.

 People with Borderline Personality Disorder, are often anxious, depressed and self harm.  People with Borderline Personality Disorder have different ways of thinking, feeling, and behavior at work, school, and socially.

 Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment  A pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterized by alternating between extremes of idealization and devaluation.  Identity disturbance: markedly and persistently unstable self-image or sense of self  Impulsivity in at least two areas that are potentially self-damaging  Recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures, or threats, or self mutilating behavior

 Affective instability due to a marked reactivity of mood  Chronic feelings of emptiness  Inappropriate, intense anger or difficulty controlling anger  Transient, stress- related paranoid ideation or severe dissociative symptoms.

 Abandonment in childhood or adolescence  Fear  Disrupted family life  Poor communication in the family  Sexual Abuse  Suicide

 If you knew someone with these symptoms what would you do and how would you treat them as an individual?

 People that have BPD are usually confused about their own identity, not knowing who they are and what they are capable of.  They are unsure of what they want out of life and are confused of their own feelings for others.  BPD drives them into a state of suicidal thinking and abusive behavior.

 Feelings of emptiness and boredom  Frequent displays of inappropriate anger  Substance abuse  Sexual relationships  Shoplifting  Constantly eating  Suicidal thoughts and actions (wrist cutting or overdose)

 People who tend to have borderline personality disorder are often uncertain about their identity.  Will tend to see things in extremes good and bad, their view on people will change.  Complications -Depression -Drug Abuse -Problems in general (work, family, relationships, and socially) -Suicide attempts and actual suicide

 Borderline Personality Disorder occurs by the differences in the brain or nervous system.  Being related to problems in the family like abuse, financial issues, death of love ones, or mental illness.  It usually begins in adolescence or in early adulthood.  Estimated that 1% to 14% of people have it.  According to 2007 studies, 9.1% of the U.S population met this criteria. (1 in 11 people)

 This is a common disorder estimated as % of the general population.  Women usually suffer from depression, more often then men.  Women and men also get it because of their experiences during their childhood.  This occurs 10 times more often in women than men.

 -Medication can help control mood swings, anxiety, panic, or depression.  Spend time in the hospital if your hurting yourself, cutting yourself, burning yourself, or attempting suicide.  There’s treatment programs, activities, and group therapy.  Learn ways to deal with stress  Treatment for alcohol or drug abuse

 Group therapy can help change these behaviors.  Medications can be given to help control mood swings.  This is a difficult disorder to treat, because if the patient doesn’t want to get better then they never will, they have to want to get better.  Help them by being understanding and non-judgmental to them there thoughts.

Unhealthy Relationship Healthy Relationship

 In order for them to get better these therapies need to be consistent.  With these symptoms patients need to increase there impulse control, stability in relationships, and self. Hoping the patients will change and get rid of theses patterns taking place.  With long-term therapy you will gradually improve.
