Darfur Genocide

Background Darfur is a region on the western side of Sudan. (A country on the east coast of Africa.) shared territory between Britain and Egypt. Religious division. Received independence in The Darfur region of Sudan is home to racially mixed Muslim tribes and Christians.

February 2002, Darfur uprising –DLF- Darfurian Liberation Front –Masalit Wanted independence Government response. Local governments couldn’t stop the genocide. Word reaches outside.

Results has killed more than 500,000 civilians. displaced 2.5 million people from their homes. Cease-fires reached and failed. UN asked to take over. Peace agreement partially signed. Fell apart.

World Response Little response until 2007 UN Troops refused Sudan. In 2007 they finally allowed the UN in. The UN authorized a force of 26,000. January 2008 half of the troops arrived. Poorly equipped and limited. Peace once again attempted. But to no avail. –Jimmy Carter and Desmond Tutu were part of the peace process.
