Quasimodo: ¿Qué es la diferencia entre un objeto directo y un objeto indirecto?
Presentation transcript:

Quasimodo: What do you remember about Indirect Objects and Indirect Object Pronouns from last semester? What do you know/remember about Direct Objects and Direct Object Pronouns from your English classes?

Direct Objects: This is the object that receives the action of the verb. It answers the question “who?” or “what?” It can be a person or thing. Examples: ▫He throws the ball. ▫We push Maria towards Bill. ▫Ellos me dan la pelota. ▫Ustedes comen las pizzas.

Indirect Objects (review): The object that tells us where the direct object (D.O.) is going (sometimes this D.O. is implied). Answers the question: “to whom?” or “for whom?” Can be a person or a thing. Circle the indirect objects below in the following examples: ▫He throws the ball to María. ▫We give the present to them. ▫Ellos me dan la pelota a mí. ▫Ustedes nos gritan (yell) a nosotros.

DOP and IOP You will remember that Indirect objects ALWAYS work with a pronoun. You may sometimes want to replace the Direct object with one as well.

Direct Object Pronouns (DOP’s) Me (me)Nos (us) Te (you, singular informal)Os (y’all, informal) Lo, la (you, singular formal)Los, las (you all, formal) Lo, la (him, her, it)Los, las (them)

Indirect Object Pronouns (IOP’s) Me (to me)Nos (to us) Te (to you, singular informal)Os (to y’all, informal) Le (to you, singular formal)Les (to you all, formal) Le (to him, to her, to it)Les (to them)

On your worksheet: Do the first part of the work on the sheet (circling and underlining) If you get done early, what did you notice about: ▫The location of the DOPs and IOPs in the Spanish versions. ▫The order of the DOPs and IOPs in the Spanish versions.

What did you come up with?

Location of the DOP and IOP: If there is one conjugated verb the DOP and/or IOP must go before the conjugated verb. ▫Ustedes me dan los libros. ▫Ellos lo leen. If there are two verbs working together the DOP and/or IOP can either go before the conjugated verb or be attached to the end of the second verb. Both are correct options. ▫Ellos lo necesitan estudiar. ▫Ellos necesitan estudiarlo. With a affirmative command the DOP and/or IOP typically would be attached to the end of the command. ▫Dime la verdad. ▫Cómelo.

R.I.D. You don’t need to worry about Reflexive pronouns quite yet, but if you have more than one pronoun of these pronouns working in a sentence you follow the R.I.D order for the pronouns: Reflexive, Indirect, Direct Examples: ▫Damelo. ▫Ustedes me lo dan.

“La La Rule” When both pronouns begin with the letter “L” you need to switch the first pronoun to “se” Examples: ▫Give her it:  Dálelo  Dáselo ▫We give them it:  Nosotros les lo damos  Nosotros se lo damos.

Tarea: Translation part of the homework.
