* It evolved after the 1954 publication of Frederic Wertham’s Seduction of the Innocent. * The book claimed that comics were a major cause of juvenile crime. * Wertham used New York City adolescents from troubled backgrounds with previous evidence of behavior disorders as his primary sample population. * Tainted and poisoned perceptions that Americans had of the comic book industry.

* Grouped all comic books into one category: crime comics. * No scientific study or method. * Interviewed criminals and asked them what they read. * Only noted those who cited comic books… * (Jaffe & Monnin, 2013)

* Although it is difficult to determine who coined the term “graphic novel,” most scholars credit Will Eisner and his 1978 publication of the first graphic novel, The Contract with God. * The purpose behind a graphic novel, according to Eisner and other artists, is to show that sequential images and words could work together to tell a literary- level story. (Jaffe & Monnin, 2013)

* “The world told is a different world to the world shown.” (Kress, 2003)

What is a Panel?  A panel is a visual boundary outlined in black ink.  Each panel contains a piece of the story.

Flow of Panels

Concept of Time in Panels

Setting Panel Focuses on where and when the story takes place.

Rising Action Panel Focuses on the events that escalate the tension in the story.

Conflict Panel Focuses on the struggle or tension of the story. Maggie has always been home schooled; now she has to adjust to the school environment.

Plot Panel Focuses on the action or events of the story.

Character Panel Focuses on the description of the characters in the story.

Climax Panel Brings the rising action panels to a culminating moment or experience to solve the problem.

Resolution Panel Focuses on the solution to the conflict or tension.

Foreshadowing Panel Gives clues to the reader about what will happen later on in the plot. Anakin will become Darth Vader

Symbols Panel The man made world is not the real world.

Sometimes the world forces us to have a moment of silence.
