Table of Contents Chapter 1:WHY TO PLAY SOCCER Chapter 2:WHAT IS SOCCER Chapter 3:SOCCER VS FOOTBALL Chapter 4:WHAT TO WEAR Chapter 5:WHAT TO BRING Chapter 6:GAMES Glossary

Chapter 1:WHY TO PLAY SOCCER You should play soccer because it gives you exercise. You can get a chance to go outside. Everybody can play soccer. Even grownups play soccer. Soccer is a fun sport to play. You kick the ball and run around and try to get it in the goal. Soccer can teach you good sportsmanship.

Chapter 2:WHAT IS SOCCER Soccer is a sport that gives you exercise. Some places that you play in the soccer are offense. Offense is when you try to get it in the goal. Center is like offense, but when the other team is not kicking off the center of your team does. Soccer is easy to play, just kick the ball. You try to pass the ball to a teammate. You can try to get it in the goal too. The most important rule of soccer is that you can’t use your hands unless you’re goalie.

Chapter 3:SOCCER VS FOOTBALL There are some things that are different between football and soccer. Football players use their hands and soccer players use their feet. In soccer you kick the ball, and in football you throw the ball. In football when they score they call it a touchdown and in soccer they call it a score. In soccer they use a net to score and in football they use a post. In football they tackle people and soccer they can’t tackle or push. There are some things that are the same between football and soccer. Football and soccer both use cleats. Soccer and football are both sports. Football and soccer both pass to other teammates. Soccer and football both use balls just different balls. Soccer and football both have protection.

Chapter 4:WHAT TO WEAR There are certain things you need to wear to practice. For practice you wear a t-shirt and shorts. For your feet you should wear shin guards under your long socks and you should wear cleats. There are different things you need for a game. You should wear shin guards and cleats. You should wear a red or gray or what your couch tells you to wear. You should wear black shorts to soccer games too. You cannot wear any jewelry or earrings while you play, even at practices.

Chapter 5:WHAT TO BRING You need to bring certain things with you. You should bring a water bottle to soccer. Sometimes you should bring a soccer ball to practice. When you’re in a young soccer group your parents can sign up to bring a snack after a game.

Chapter 6:GAMES There are many things you’ll need to know about playing a soccer game. First, your coach tells you where to go on the field. You go to stand where your coach tells you like offense, center, defense or goalie. To start the game the referee blows his whistle and the game starts. Then you try to get it in the goal!

Glossary exercise–a way of getting your body in shape Cleats – shoes Shin guards– some protection for the front of your legs Coach – someone who tells you where to go offense-a place on the field
