Chapter One Fitness and Wellness for All Fitness for Life Pgs 2-21

Physical Fitness Physical Fitness is the ability of your body systems to work together efficiently to allow you to be healthy and effectively perform activities of daily living. A fit person has energy left over after performing their daily responsibilities.

Health vs. Wellness Health is more than just the absence of disease. Health also focuses on prevention of illness. Wellness is a state of being that enables you to reach your full potential. It includes intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual aspects.

Physical Activity Physical activity is a general term referring to any body movement which includes sports, dance, and daily activities (walking, yard work, etc.)

Exercise Exercise is done purposely to build fitness

Fitness, Health, and Wellness Benefits Cycle of Physical Activity Benefits Being Physically Active leads to: 1. good fitness 2. improved health & wellness

Look Good and Feel Good Regular physical activity will help you look your best! Doing regular physical activity will also help you feel better. Your body can resist fatigue and is less likely to be injured.

Flexibility Flexibility is the ability to move your joints through a wide range of motion

Hypokinetic Conditions Hypokinetic conditions are health problems caused partly by lack of activity 1. heart disease 2. high blood pressure 3. diabetes 4. osteoporosis 5. obesity

Skill Related Physical Fitness Fitness in these areas help people excel in sports (people who are “athletic”) 1. agility 2. balance 3. coordination 4. power 5. reaction time 6. speed
