By Luke Wilkins English 9 Period 1

 The typical family consisted the mother, the father, and the children.  Many people married early because there was a short life expectancy.  Since the average life span was close to 40 years of age, very few people lived to be grandparents.

 Men had ownership of the land, but usually worked out of the house in fields or in merchant shops.

 Women stayed home to run the house and take care of the family.  They did most of the cooking, cleaning, and tutoring of the children. women.html

 Children were thought of as small adults.  They dressed like adults and were spoken to as adults.  Many children entered the work force at age 8. Of course they had to keep themselves busy during those first 8 years, so they played with the few toys available to them.

 Some males did have an education.  If the family could afford it, they were sent to private schools.  Many boys were tutored at home or didn’t receive any education at all.

 Girls usually did not receive professional education.  They stayed home to help their mothers with the home.  Sometimes girls would be sent to work as servants in wealthy homes to help with the family’s costs.  Females were considered children until they were married.
