7. A Woman’s Place in the 19 th Century Women could not have careers. Had to obey fathers, husbands, and brothers. Could be beaten if they did something to anger their father, husband, or brother. Received less education than males. Women’s sole purpose was to marry and have children. All of the women’s possessions belonged to her father or her husband when she married.
