3 At the origins of the Red Cross A battle … A man …. A committee History Battle of Solferino- 24 June 1859. French vs Austrian troops. 40,000 wounded and dead in only a few hours. Henry Dunant witnessed the battle.

4 Published in 1862 Would it not be possible, in time of peace and quiet, to form relief societies for the purpose of having care given to the wounded in wartime? … some international principle, sanctioned by a convention inviolate in charter, which once agreed upon and ratified, might constitute the basis for societies for the relief of the wounded in the different countries...

9 The ICRC is a private, Swiss, independent humanitarian organization based in Geneva. It works to protect and assist victims of armed conflict or disturbances either on its own initiative or on the basis of the Geneva Conventions.

12 Establishment of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies 5 th May 1919, on the invitation of the Chairman of the American Red Cross, Henry P. Division, representatives of America, British, French, Italian and Japanese Red Cross Societies came together to formally establish the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies which is now the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies since 28 th Nov. 1991. Its First objective was “to strengthen and unite for health activities of existing RC/RC Societies and promote the creation of new Societies.

13 Federation’s main purpose The Federation’s main purposes are to assist its member National Societies in:- Disaster Preparedness Disaster Response Health Activities Promotion of Humanitarian Values Promote IHL and Fundamental Principles of the Movement. Among the member Societies, the Federation acts as both catalyst and coordinator. It is a forum for ideas and exchange of experience between the National Societies.

14 After the First and Second World War the the NS’s expanded their activities into many fields of medico-social activities like : Founding Hospitals Training Nurses Child care and public health Health Education Vaccination Campaign Pioneering Ambulances Rescue Services First Aid Services and Training Promotion of HV and Fundamental Principles

15  The National Red Cross and Red crescent Societies are the base of the Movement.  There are 186 officially recognized Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies uniting around 135 million individual volunteers and over 300,000 employees.  In collaboration with the Federation and ICRC, the National Societies support each other in strengthening and development of their institutional and operational capacities.
