4 Function of the Respiratory System  The primary function of the respiratory system is to supply the blood with oxygen, in order for the blood to deliver oxygen to all parts of the body.

5 Respiration Breathing and Respiration are NOT the same. Breathing… Movement of the chest that brings air in the lungs and removes waste gasses. Respiration… glucose + oxygen = CO2 + H20 + energy

6  Breathing is the movement of the chest that brings air into the lungs and removes waste gases.  Respiration is when your cells use oxygen and dissolved food to form energy!

8  1) Pharynx—a tube-like passageway used by food, liquid, and air.  2) Epiglottis—A flap of tissue that separates air and food going down.  3) Larynx—the airway to which two pairs of horizontal folds of tissue, called vocal cords are attached.

9  4) Trachea—Long tube of thick cartilage that brings air to the lungs  5) Bronchi—2 smaller tubes that lead into the lungs and split off into smaller and smaller tubes, such as bronchioles and alveoli.

10 Organs of the Respiratory System

11  The alveoli are the final branchings of the respiratory tree and act as the primary gas exchange units of the lung.

12  Its all about your diaphragm! Similar to a squeezed bottle.  Your diaphragm is beneath your lungs and contract/relaxes to move gases in an out!

13 What are hiccups?  An involuntary spasm of the diaphragm and respiratory organs, with a sudden closure of the glottis and a sound like a cough.

14  Respiratory Infections  Chronic Bronchitus  Emphysema  Lung Cancer  Asthma

15 Lung Capacity  The volume of both lungs combined or how much air your lungs can hold.

16 Respiratory Rate  The number of breaths a living being, such as a human, takes within a certain amount of time (frequently given in breaths per minute).  Who do you think has a faster respiratory rate?
