2 Adolf Hitler was born in Austria in 1889 He moved to Vienna as a young man where he lived in poverty He was refused entry to art college Hitler developed a hatred of the Jews while living in Vienna

3 When World War 1 broke out Hitler joined the German Army He quickly rose to the rank of corporal. He fought very bravely and won an Iron Cross First Class Hitler was angry when Germany surrendered to the allies.

4 The Treaty of Versailles Main Terms  War Guilt Clause  Germany had to pay reparations  Lost territory to France and Poland  Rhineland demilitarised  German army limited to 100,000 men. Not allowed an airforce

5 Hitler joined the Nationalist Socialist German Workers Party. He soon became the leader. In 1923 the Nazi party tried to seize power with the “Munich Putsch”. The coup failed. Hitler was arrested and imprisoned. While in prison he set out his political ideas in his book “Mein Kampf”

6 Hitler’s Ideas  The Treaty of Versailles was the cause of all of Germany’s problems.  Democracy weak. Totalitarian state needed  Anti- Communist  Grossdeutschland  Lebensraum  Anti- Semitic

7 Economic Problems in Germany High Unemployment High Inflation (hyper- inflation) Wall Street Crash, 1929 Unemployment rose to 6million

8 Hitler’s rise to power SA (storm troopers) wore Brownshirts. Led by Ernst Rhom they were the Nazi private army. Supporters SS (Schutzstaffel ) wore Blackshirts. Led by Heinrich Himmler they were elite soldiers and acted as Hitler’s bodyguards

9 Germans turned away from democracy and towards extreme parties such as the Nazis and the Communists 1928 Nazis had 13 seats 1932 Nazis had 230 seats SA and SS intimidated people Promised to create employment and make Germany great.

10 Promised to tear up Treaty of Versailles Blamed the Jews and the Communists for Germany’s problems Used Propaganda very effectively

12 Hitler becomes a dictator  January 1933 becomes Chancellor of Germany  Reichstag building was burnt down. Hitler blamed and then banned the Communists  Enabling Act (allows Hitler to rule by Decree)  The Gestapo (secret police)
