We love our royal governor James Wright Our royal governor is very loyal to King George III and Great Britain We are the youngest colony Everywhere else Great Britain was the greatest, most powerful nation on Earth. The other older, colonies in the north are angry and upset with how they are being treated by Great Britain. The colonists are going to go from proud and loyal British Subjects to fighting the country that help start them in an all out brawl call the American Revolutionary War

6. The French and Indian War Spain was no longer a threat France emerged as a greatest rival to Great Britain 1754 to 1763 war fought over the land in America between the English and French. It was called the Seven Years War in Europe. They disputed about land in the Ohio River Valley Called the French and Indian War because the Indians helped the French in the war against the British. The Indians had nothing to lose. The British were taking their land, the French were not.

Impact of The French and Indian War The war was very brutal and violent –Native Americans would attack civilian settlements and sometimes murder entire families France lost and had to sign the Treaty of Paris –Gave up all of their colonies in North America –Spain gave Florida to Britain –It changed Georgia’s western border from the Pacific Ocean to the Mississippi River Great Britain has a huge amount of debt from fighting the war on behalf of the colonists The British were going to have to defend the colonies from hostile Indians west of the Appalachians Mountains

9. Proclamation of 1763 There is a new King in town… King George III Forbid colonists to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. Created to protect colonists from the Indians Many colonists reacted with anger toward the Proclamation. They did not like being told what to do or where they could live. Have Your Parents ever tried to give you rules about going outside to play? How do you feel if they tell you that you can only play in a certain part of the neighborhood.

11. Taxes French and Indian War cost a lot of money. Parliament (the British government) decided to tax to colonies to help pay for it. The first tax was the Sugar Act of 1764. It placed a tax on molasses and sugar imported by the colonies. Tea Act placed a tax on all tea Stamp Act of 1765 placed a tax on all printed material, such as newspapers and playing cards. This tax upset the colonists even more. THE STAMP ACT CAUSED THE FIRST MAJOR, WIDESPREAD PROTESTS AGAINST BRITISH RULE!!! Acts and Taxes

No Taxation without Representation The colonists claimed “no taxation without representation” because they were being taxed but had no vote in Parliament and had no say in how the colonies were being governed. No Representation then no taxes The colonists started a boycott, or a refusal to buy certain goods, from the British.

15. Animosity Is Growing Boston Massacre –mob of angry colonists in Boston taunted and threatened to attack a small unit of British soldiers. The soldiers fired into the mob and killed five colonists. The event was called the Boston Massacre. Boston Tea Party –British colonists boycotted British tax on tea by dumping nearly 350 chests of tea (thousands of dollars worth) into Boston Harbor. Sons of Liberty – secret society called the Sons of Liberty. –Georgia had a very active chapter –Used violence to scare away tax collectors

16. Intolerable Acts King George III was furious with the colonists! In order to punish the colony of Massachusetts, a series of laws called the Coercive Acts were passed. THE LAWS WERE SO HARSH THAT THE COLONISTS FELT THEY WERE “INTOLERABLE”. a) The Boston Port Act – closed the port of Boston to trade b) The Impartial Administration of Justice Act – stated that trials for British officials would be moved out of Massachusetts to another colony or to England c) The Massachusetts Government Act – took away the colony’s charter and prohibited town meetings d) The Quartering Act – required colonists to provide housing for British soldiers without compensation
