Dolphins are carnivores (meat eaters). The Killer Whale (also known as Orca) is actually a type of dolphin. Female dolphins are called cows, males are called bulls and young dolphins are called calves. Dolphins live in schools or pods of up to 12 individuals. Dolphins often display a playful attitude which makes them popular in human culture. They can be seen jumping out of the water, riding waves, play fighting and occasionally interacting with humans swimming in the water. Dolphins use a blowhole on top of their heads to breathe. Dolphins have excellent eyesight and hearing as well as the ability to use echolocation for finding the exact location of objects. Dolphins communicate with each other by clicking, whistling and other sounds. Some fishing methods, such as the use of nets, kill a large number of dolphins every year.

© 2015 albert-learning.com Facts For Juniors The brain is the center of the human nervous system, controlling our thoughts, movements, memories and decisions. With evolution, the human brain has become more and more complicated, many of its interesting properties are still not well understood by scientists. The brain contains billions of nerve cells that send and receive information around the body. The human brain is over three times as big as the brain of other mammals that are of similar body size. Each side of the brain interacts largely with just one half of the body, but for reasons that are not yet fully understood, the interaction is with opposite sides, the right side of the brain interacts with the left side of the body, and vice versa. The largest part of the human brain is called the cerebrum. The human brain is protected by the skull (cranium), a protective casing made up of 22 bones that are joined together. The brain of an adult human weighs around 3 pounds (1.5 kg). Although it makes up just 2% of the body's weight, it uses around 20% of its energy.

© 2015 albert-learning.com Facts For Juniors Rabbits and parrots can see behind themselves without even moving their heads! Butterflies taste food by standing on top of it! Their taste receptors are in their feet unlike humans who have most on their tongue. Most of the dust in your home is actually dead skin! Yuck! Although the Stegosaurus dinosaur was over 9 metres long, its brain was only the size of a walnut. Humans get a little taller in space because there is no gravity pulling down on them. Because of the unusual shape of their legs, kangaroos and emus struggle to walk backwards. A hippopotamus may seem huge but it can still run faster than a man. Even if an analog clock is broken, at least it shows the correct time twice a day. Sneezing with your eyes open is impossible.

© 2015 albert-learning.com Facts For Juniors Forensic science is often used in relation to criminal matters, a lawyer may want to prove someone was present at the location of a crime for example. Samples from a crime scene are analyzed in a laboratory by specialists. Samples can include things like fingerprints, hair and gunshot residue. In the case of forensic entomology, scientists examine insects found in and around human remains to determine the time of death. Forensic toxicology studies the effect of drugs and poisons on the human body in relation to medical and legal situations. The famous fictional character Sherlock Holmes used forensic science as one of his methods for investigating crimes.

© 2015 albert-learning.com Facts For Juniors Different to a typical surname you might think of today, "da Vinci" simply means "of Vinci", the Tuscan town where he was born. Leonardo d Vinci is perhaps best known as a painter, with his legendary works including the Mona Lisa, the Vitruvian Man and the Last Supper, among others. Leonardo da Vinci wasn't just an incredible artist, he was an inventor, scientist, mathematician, engineer, writer, musician and much more. Talk about talented! His conceptual drawings included plans for musical instruments, war machines, calculators, boats and other ideas. Many of these plans were limited by the level of technology at the time. Flight was of particular interest to da Vinci. He studied the flight of birds and created plans for flying machines that resemble hang gliders and helicopters. Many of Leonardo da Vinci’s machines have since been built and tested, to varying levels of success.
